Getting to know you: Hobbies

Following on from all Liz\'s probing questions, I\'m asking one too! I\'m curious to know what the members of CMON get up to in their free time?*

Personally, I read a lot, dabble with digital art and ray-tracing, hike, play computer games (especially FPSs and CRPGs) and have been known to do handicrafts like dress-making and embroidery (no knitting tho - I could never get on with knitting!). I also like travelling and cookery and playing TT-RPGs when I can find willing victims. Dunno how I fit in a full-time job too! lol

What do you guys get up to?




*[size=-2]Anyone who answers \"Duh, I paint/collect minis!\" will be spanked on the botty and sent to bed without any dinner. Mini-related stuff is taken as a given - it\'s presumably why you\'re here in the first place! :p[/size]

Apart from painting I spend a lot of time tinkering with my car, fishing, I go to a local gaming club, go out with friends...stuff like that :)

Several different things - I read an awful lot, usually trashy stuff like Black Library, comic-book adaptations, and this new thing I discovered called Pax Britania.

I also cook. Spend a lot time in the kitchen doing terrible things to food. Mostly experimenting with flavours and methods of cooking. Heston Blumenthal has a lot to answer for here ...

Occasionally, I write - some fanfiction, but lately, I\'ve been giving my wife a hand bringing one of her dreams to life by helping her write a novel. I get to write all the fight scenes :). Well, some, at least.

I\'ll never play the guitar again, thanks to this bloody arthritis, but I can still handle a keyboard. It\'s clumsy and cumbersome to set-up compared to the guitar, but it brings me some joy.

And when I can get away with it, I play around with casting and building with Hirst Arts moulds. It\'s incredibly messy, and my wife gets some serious shits whenever I break them out, so it ain\'t too often. It\'s the one thing that really doesn\'t aggravate my arthritis, though.

I also read a lot, mostly fantasy or detectiv stories, I\'m learning to play bass, I play several p&p RPGs (D&D4.0, Dark Heresy, just started Eclipse Phase) as well as video- or computer games (RPGs, Shooter, \"Actiongames\"). And I love cooking and bakeing, especialyfor my boyfriend.

Computer games when I have the time (never at the moment) reading - novels and graphic novels, skiing occasionally, watching movies/TV thats about it these days.

I got into minis because I HAD NO hobbies and was bored.

Not the case now. Got my Netflix queue to go through, collect and build Lego Star Wars vehicles (currently trying to finish the star destroyer), play some small online games, and the biggest hobby I\'ve got right now is trying to program iPhone games. My C skills are very rusty, and its very frustrating right now, but I\'m enjoying it!

my hobbies became my work (still enjoy playing guitar but painting now sucks) which is why when i get a little freetime (not often) i am starting to get into sculpting (i am realy crap at it)

as for other interests, i no longer have the time or money so had to give them up a few years ago.

I read a lot. Plenty of fantasy, but other things as well. In fact, I think most fantasy litterature is quite crap, so I rather re-read the stuff I like than reading new crap.

I listen to music a LOT, and often go to concerts or nightclubs. Occasionally, I DJ at some club. I buy a lot of music (yes, physical records, preferably vinyl).

I do a lot of cooking. I enjoy mediterranean cooking the most, I think. Too bad my girlfriend is allergic to a few of the most common ingredients. :~(

I watch films quite a lot too. Favourite genres are probably horror and psychological thrillers, although I have a soft spot for classical kung-fu film and epic costume drama film as well.

Oh, and I really enjoy trying interesting beers. :drunk:

Work+kids take enough time so miniatures remains the main hobby. However, with kids growing up I often go back to my old hobbies - hiking and kayaking (is it a word?). The goal for now (for kids mostly) is 15 miles a day with the gear :)

On the Hirst Arts boards, there is a user with the handle MWTMH - Man With Too Many Hobbies (or something like that). I can relate.

Raising girls. One\'s now married the other is in college. So I\'m finished with that hobby (if one can ever truly finish... lol ).

Fishing. I\'d be out on the boat at dawn most days, but I have to work - and have too many other hobbies - so it ends up being about every other Saturday. Not near enough...

Painting. I don\'t do near enough of it anymore..... I did just redo my airbrush cart and am doing face painting this weekend for my church\'s fall festival. For a while, if it would hold still long enough, I\'d paint it. Now, it seems almost too much work to drag the stuff out.

Shooting. I\'ve hunted and shot for fun since I can remember. Pistol team in college. Pretty good with a long gun, but my brother and dad are still better than me with the shotgun (I\'ll never admit to them that I said that....). I\'d shoot competitively now, but it would interfere with fishing....

TT-RPG - I\'ve been playing D&D since the late 70\'s.

My house has turned into a hobby of it\'s own. We\'ve redone nearly every room (flooring, paint, moved some walls, etc.) except one bathroom... Now that the kids are out of the house, I\'m saving up to gut that room and redo it. (sunshine yellow fixtures and tile :|~ )

I also play on my grill (and do a pretty good dead animal there....).

Dabble a bit in woodworking. I\'ve got to get some junk out of my garage and get the saws all set up again - now that it is just Peggy & I in the house. (my dear old Dad says I\'m pretty good at making expensive sawdust...) :rolleyes:

Backpacking when I can - I live down the road from Sequoia National Park, and about 2.5 hours from Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite. Now that my back pain is gone, this should be more often.

I like to write a lot, and have a couple places that I post articles on current events and religion. I like to joke that I started responding to prompts in college, and now I can\'t stop doing it.

Other stuff, hmm...board games when the wife is in town, play with the puppy dogs when she isn\'t. 3 day D&D weekends about 3 times a year, and regular Bible studies.

I\'m a pretty boring person, honestly. I think its my response to an early life that was way too exciting.

minis are the top, simply cos you can take bits around with you. also i am always thinking of ideas for what to do next

also surf when i can (badly, only just learning to longboard after yrs of bodyboarding, it\'s been so long that i needed to relearn how to bodyboard so i figured i might as well learn to stand as well!)

used to play badminton and squash but dont have the time

i play rpgs and fps\'s on the comp, watch films, listen to music, read

also hope to buy a bike at the w/e so i want to get back into that. rock n roll!!

Mini painting aside I do the following:

1. Spend too much time looking at minis on CMON and NOT painting lol

2. Read Star Wars and GW novels

3. Study

4. Play with my animals

5. Watch movies

Last and most important, annoy my GF :D
