I wouldn\'t do that at all! We\'re not rating people on their skills at reassembling photos, and backgrounds are a distraction that shave at least two points off a score.
I use GIMP exclusively, and I only do five things to photos.
1. Crop the pic down so there\'s some space on all sides, but nothing more than 1/4 of the width of the model.
2. MENU:Tools|Color Tools|Levels...
Click on the Auto button and hit OK. If I\'ve done the photography right virtually nothing should happen! If a massive change occurs I go back and retake the photo.
3. MENU:Filters|Enhance|Unsharp Mask...
I just accept the defaults. It\'s important to do this BEFORE scaling the image down. I find there\'s less distortion of the image.
4. MENU:Image|Scale Image...
If it\'s a big model I just do a front view of 600 pixels wide. If it\'s a small model I take front and back pics and shrink each to 300 pixels wide.
5. Optional, and I aint going into details here (should I write an article?):
Cut and paste the back view of a model and set it beside the front view using layers. A lot of painters put their names or a logo on an image. I don\'t because it\'s extra bother I don\'t have the time for.

You do it pretty much the same way using GIMP just with the little scissor tool instead. It takes some practice though. Click around the part you want to cut out then click inside that area to select it.
