Giving bust painting a go...

This is my first attempt at bust painting and I am not sure what I am doing here. I am looking for a little advice on the skin. I am trying to go for a leathery weathered skin kind of look. I feel that it is a little to red. Any suggestions on what I should do to change?

Also, when painting larger scale (this is 1/9) is it necessary to paint all the shadow and highlight? I wonder if that is the problem here is that I am trying to paint every little nook, cranny and shadow.

As soon as I posted these pics I could see a problem with the eyes...I need to fix that.

Any thoughts?

on larger scale pieces,.. "smooth and subtle" is worth more then "forced contrast". I'd say that you need another coat or two of lighter skin tone on the "upper" surfaces (ie: upper cheekbones, just over the brow, down the bridge of the nose,.. etc)

So I was not totally happy with the face, I too was thinking his gaze looked a bit soft. So I set things aside for a few days, went back to it and I have pushed some highlights a little further, lowered the eyebrows, and added some red into the brow area to add to the stern appearance, I like this version a lot better. All the oils are sealed at this point and now I will move onto the rest of the bust.

A couple of things to think about for busts is that texture is something that is very noticeable in larger scales, in the initial picture the face looked kinda a rough casting and seemed as if it needed a wash of "Milliput Milk" to smooth out.
But the reworked face doesn't look anywhere as rough.

Where's this bust from?
