Depends on what you\'re talking about. For sit and look at, never get played with minis, like the larger Thunderbolt Mountain pieces I have I prefer flat or dull coat. For my gaming pieces, I prefer gloss cause it wears better, and I\'m not repainting every year or so.

shinny happy people...

steelcult;

I think there are several good uses for gloss but I don\'t particularly care for the look. Like Stormwarning said, it helps with wear problems on pieces that you game with regularly, but I don\'t care for the look. My solution has been to use two coats of gloss sealer followed my a coat or two of flat. That way they\'re not shiny, but they get that hard crunchy shell ;)

I also like to use brush-on gloss on gems and such that I want to make shiny, including tongues, etc.

Thems my thought, take em or leave em!

Cheers,
Grumb

Why waste time and money on gloss when you can give your GD entry to your moron friend in the queue outside Gamesday whilst you tie your shoe and he\'ll drop it in his KFC bucket for you, resulting in a nice shiny finish. Mmmm delicious! BTW you know who you are and no I still don\'t forgive you!!!

Man, that\'d have to be one of the quickest ways of ruining a friendship...

Never come between a man and his mini;)

Does the dual gloss then dual dull varnish really work? I do a lot of gameplay and i like my minis to be well painted, but they get ruined very fast.

Please reply, I prefer in private, as I don\'t lurk on the forums very often.

Greetings.

I tend to use both on every mini. I like flat for skin, fabric and most woods. I like gloss for metals and polished wood. I use brush on but recently bought a can of dullcoat because everyone praises it so much. I have a question though: when people talk about gloss, do they usually mean some kind of spray on, and if so, what kind is best?

I dont use varnish at all but then again i dont play at all either. Every varnish i have used either messes up the color or stripped the color. :\\

Very true, a KFC bucket before 10:00 am deserves every abuse hurled at him.

Almost as bad as Tikka Chicken Massala for breakfast! ;)

If I ever use gloss, I paint it on after I dullcoat with Testors (aerosol gold for painters). And to prevent any mishaps with chicken or other protien by-product, I make it clear people are to maintain a 2 foot cushion with my minis at all time. Faliure to will result in their heads being bitten off. :p

Do you provide the cushion? or do they have to bring their own?
(imagining Chrispy getting married and the little girl dropping rose petals and the little boy following carrying a 2 foot cushion but instead of a ring there\'s a Rackham dwarf on it)

Cushion of space. And only God can provide that unless modern physics is drastically wrong...
Anyways, when I get married, I\'ll probably put an ogre or clay golem guy and elf maiden on the cake. Stranger things have been done. (looks in Darkblade\'s direction) :bouncy:

its usually a spray on gloss... I reccomend model master/testors... they both have the same manufacturer..... the good thing about it is that is gives a nice, even coat.... I\'ve never had much problem with bubbles, or cracks with these two brands even when i spray up close, and live in a very humid climate to boot.

Ick. I hate krylon. I\'ve used thier \"art coat\" for one or two minis, but once I got this evil frost effect even after cleaning the cap.. I guess I should stick to using it for charcoal..
