Glossy P3 paints

Bought several P3 paints to increase my paint variety, before i mostly have Vallejo Model Color, which are great paints, but it\'s impossible to find \"right\" colors from 200 different paintbottles.

I was in need for more saturated colors, which P3 are, but damn they dry glossy. My Coal Black looks like it has cover of gloss varnish over it. Tried lots of shaking, diluting with water, diluting with water and flow aid, diluting with matt medium, diluting with matt medium and water etc, still same glossy look.

Been looking for it like 3 years here in Finland. Can\'t order spray things over airmail too...

I have tested W&N matt varnish, VMC matt varnish, VMA matt varnish... Best i can get is satin.

Damn i want dead flat like Vallejo Model Color paints.

I often mix P3 with VMC and that gives a nice, flat finish. Another thing you can do, if you use a P3 colour on its own, is to highlight and shade using VMC paints. Thus, most of the area will be a mix of the P3 paint and VMC and will be quite flat.

I\'ve noticed that glossyness as well....

I also have that issue with some of the FOUNDRY paints I use.

How\'s availability of Tamiya stuff? Look for X-21, Flat Base. Mix a little into your paint and it\'ll help a lot.

You can also use it to make a good flat overcoat, mixed with Klear if it\'s available in Finland; but come to think of it it\'ll help flatten any of the varnishes you\'ve already tried if you have any remaining.

The P3 paints are, in fact, more of a satin finish than Citadel or Vallejo. It\'s intentional, and Mike McVey said that it was to make them more durable, and he should know since he helped develop them back when he was still at Privateer Press.

You can tone that sheen down as some have suggested by mixing with Vallejo colors, or you can also add a bit of matte medium (Vallejo makes some) and that will help, too. Best is to seal with a good, matte finish. The Vallejo brush on matte varnish is pretty good if you do multiple, thin coats.

Actually i tried using VMC matt medium with p3 with no other effect than adding more transparency. Matt medium works great with GW paints and vallejo, but don\'t understand why it doesn\'t have effect with p3.

Well i put sale my p3 paints and bought some new VMC\'s, so \"case closed\".

Might simply be that the P3 is glossier to begin with, so the slight effect it has isn\'t enough to compensate.

i thought foundry paints were p3 paints? i heard privateer press bought into them to merchandise their line of p3\'s?

P3 gives me nothing but problems. They lighter colors get way too chalky if you dilute them, plus the pigments separate too easily. I do not know how people like Julien Casses can use them with such great results... whenever I do I end up throwing the mini in a simple green bath and starting over with colors that actually work.

I dislike them a lot, for regular painting, but I like a lot of the colors for washes and glazes. The coal black for example, as well as Sanguine base and bloodstone.

But I\'ve had to try and come to grips with them for some of the commission requests. \'Cause I was asked to match paint to existing paint schemes it just seems easier to use an off the shelf product than try to mix and mathc my own mix out of my beloved Vallejo Model color.

I don\'t at all like the quality of the paint. I know Jah uses them (or maybe used too?) and got great results as well.

I\'ve never had any problems with separation... and lately I\'ve been using about 50% Citadel and 50% P3 when I\'m working on projects. Really it\'s Citadel for the new washes, Foundation paints, and metallics and P3 for everything else if I can help it. I absolutely love the P3 and you\'re right they do make great washes :)
