Glues - both a recommendation and enquiry

For metals I use Zap-a-Gap and it works fairly well. Sometimes I really have to hold stuff together for longer than is comfortable though.

For plastics there is the most kick @$$ stuff called Ambroid\'s ProWeld: Professional Plastic Welder. $3 for 2 Fluid Oz. This stuff is great - it melts the plastic and makes a super strong bond - I couldn\'t, without some very serious effort, break an Empire Militiaman at the torso/leg join to reposition him after this stuff set. Really terrific - set enough to put down after 1-2 seconds and made putting together GW sprue sets an absolute dream. I got exactly what I wanted nearly instantly. Never again will I lift a finger off only to have a piece come off with it - or have to press hard on tiny bits for over a minute - or have to lean an arm against a paint bottle so it doesn\'t fall off the figure. No more vice clamps, no rubber bands, no paper clips. Even dropped from a height of 4 feet (on the way to be primed) there was no loss of limbs or anything.

Question: is there an equivelent for metal? - like arms to torsos or for stands to washers (as bases). Just cleaning a Mithril figure tonight resulted in a Zap A Gap bonded arm on the floor - and that was glued on over a year ago! Anything that works as strongly as this ProWeld I got?

Actually, I\'ve started to wonder if it is maybe the state of California that causes cancer! After all, have you ever noticed how many things are known to cause cancer in California? Does this mean, btw that it doesn\'t cause cancer if you live in other states or countries?

I found this at my local Target and Home Depot. It\'s by the makers of Super Glue but bonds much more quickly with some mighty impressive hold. I haven\'t smacked figures bonded using it with a hammer or anything else over the top, but it seems to be better than ZapaGap under normal use.

I just started using \"Insta-cure\". My hobby shop sells it right next to the Zap-a-Gap.

You put Z-a-G on one metal piece and the Insta-cure on the other metal piece and when you stick the two pieces together you only have to hold them for about 5 seconds.

It sounds like Insta-Cure is a brand name for what is more commonly known as a Cyano-Accrylate Accelerator. Zap-a-Gap is a Cyano-Accrylate superglue (hence the CA+ on the label.) these products are sold under such dubious brand names as \"Flashtac\" (which I currently have at home) and \"Zip Kicker\". They are extremely fumey (it smells like aerosol) and does, as seen on TV, accelerate the curing process for CA+ superglues. however, they also weaken the adhesion.

What does this mean to you? ??? That yes, it will take less time to cure (the indicated 5 seconds) you will not be able to drop it and have the bond hold. I don\'t know of any product that will bond metal to metal like the ProWeld does plastic.

Oh, and California DOES cause cancer. just look at the smog, er, uhm air in L.A.:|~

when asked if he has any Zap a gap Brian the owner of a local train store (i buy most of my hoby supplies from a local train store nest to my school on my prep periods) he said CA is CA and for the most part that is true. I tend to use normal CA and acellerator. But for most of my metal components i pin with paperclips.

Now plastic is a different story i tend to use testors with thier metal tube aplicator in the black triangle bottle

Well to be honest I\'ve had no luck what-so-ever with any glues. If it\'s epoxy, cyano-acrylate, or even plastic cement. I couldn\'t recommend a damned thing. The GW stuff seems to be okay but nothing spectacular. I\'ve had rotten luck with it all.
The best stuff I\'ve used so far is a cyanoacrylate called \"Jet\" . I only ever found it once and never was able to replace it. It came in 4 viscosities and had a speed dry fluid as well. But its been 5+ years. *sigh*

I sell Loctite at work but I find I have some hobby specifics I prefer for minis.

I use Flash Cyanoacrylate (I use thick but it comes in many thicknesses) and GW Superglue interchangably. I use FLASHTAC as a cyanoacrylate accelerator (AMAZING) and I use Flash debonder to pop off the glue I no longer need or to reopen bonds.

Debonder is worth its weight in gold.

Accelerators also are.

I use superglue 3, it works realy well and come in gel form so you don\'t have it running every where over your mini. But if u want really good glue use bob smith industries IC-2000 cyanoacrylate glue, there\'s a full article on it right here :

Speaking as the female half of NVStudios....we mostly use superglue-just plaing old superglue. Havn\'t had much luck with the gell stuff. Used the plastic model glue/bonding stuff in the past, and didn\'t like the way that it melted the plastic at the seams. The biggest drawback to superglue; it sticks so nicely to skin-afterall, that\'s what it was orginally invented to do-be a replacement for stitches.

Well, since you named me...
I use Crazy Glue brand cyanoacrylate. It doesn\'t hold big stuff well though so I need to learn to pin. I use it because I can get it in the grocery store when I\'m picking up the milk and bread. Like he said, CA is CA.
I\'ve also used jeweler\'s epoxy (comes in a dual syringe so you squeeze equal amounts of the 2 gels out at the same time then you stir them with a toothpic) but you end up with a big blob of toxic paper to toss in the trash and I hate tossing paper that should have been recycled.
Funny that Evonine doesn\'t like how plastic model glue (bought anywhere they sell model car kits) because of the melty effect. That\'s why it bonds. Just try to keep it away from the edges as much as possible. There is no equivalent for metals unless you want to experiment with solder.

I use lock tite plus pinning on all my metal mini\'s. I have recently been experimenting with using greenstuff. It seems to work well on lighter arms and legs etc, but I don\'t know about the shear strength of it. I haven\'t done a plastic piece in sometime so I don\'t know what to use there. I would probably try Testors cement.

The only real drawpack to proWeld I know of is it has eaten and warped a couple of my platic mini\'s plus I can only find it in a big glass jar. The brush attached to the cap is a terrible way to apply the glue and I always have to transfer it to another container with a super glue applicator or one of the special ones from Squadren whom also makes an extremely useful tool for scrapeing off the seams on plastic joints and mold markings.
