gohkm's WIP - The Acheron Project

I have been repeatedly encouraged to start a WIP thread, so, after, oh .... I think 5 years of procrastination, I've decided that my skills are just about where I need them to be to start tackling some of my favourite models - the Acheron models from Rackham's Confrontation.

I've got a semi-army of these things, the bulk of which I intend to be a dozen Black Paladins. But here's my starting point - a couple of undead centaurs with swords, Sophat Drahas, and the Almighty Crane.

Being out of action should also give me some time to paint these up.

I'd appreciate any commentary as we go along. The project commences tomorrow night!

I ran into a few issues with Photobucket of late, and my previous images were lost. To tidy up the thread, I deleted the posts with missing images.

To date, this is what the Almighty Crane looks like. I read somewhere about a technique that could be used to get startling effects, called salting the paint (or something like that). I am going to try that out on his big cleaver.

I also test-fitted the cloak with the Enochian on him. Unfortunately, it did not work very well - the yellowish green clashed terribly with the rest of the model. It's back to the drawing board for this one.

Got a bit more done - finished up the cleaver, did up bits of the cloak (left the bony bits and gems), and finally glued the whole thing together.

I skipped out the freehand on the cloak interior because I realized that after attaching the cloak - nobody could see anything.

The cleaver and the cloak interior are painted with salt - I whacked on the paint, sprinkled on some salt, let the whole thing dry, then washed it off.

It left quite a nice texture effect to it. I will have to remember this and try it on another piece.

The Almighty Crane is almost finished. I had to make some repairs to the cloak, as it wouldn't attach right.

The Almighty Crane is finished, at last!

The salt technique I used on the cleaver is very simple - I made a dilute paint, and carelessly slopped it on. Then I got some salt crystals and sprinkled it on, then left everything to dry overnight. I washed away the salt crystals under the kitchen tap, and presto! I got some nice 3D texture on the cleaver.

I'm pretty sure this technique is old hat to some - it's a traditional watercolour technique, after all - but when my wife showed it to me on her watercolours, it blew my mind :).
