Today my pc crashed 3 times while i was working due to a malware that infected my pc visiting CMON first page. I asked to delete nasty ADS but noone seems to answer... well, i can\'t risk to destroy 4 hours of work everytime i visit cmon gallery and i don\'t want to being forced subscribing here with a Virus menace...

http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=16644&pid=276810#pid276810

this is the full story...

i don\'t think

\"No one\'s putting a gun to your head Tony, if you don\'t want to that\'s fine.

By the way, your sig needs to be under 90 pix in height.\" and

\"with subscription you can turn off advertising\" are good answers... they sound like

\"ehy pay the christmas otherwise i\'ll smash your presents...\"

well.. farewell until ads cleaning :)

Chern Ann has asked for folks to identify the ad that\'s doing it so that he can remove it. Has anyone done that yet?

couple of things in this day and age. Viruses are not the worst of the problems. Spyware can bring a computer to its knees as well.

Spybot Search & Destroy (free) will disinfect your machine and help keep it that way.

Adaware (you gotta pay for this, but not much) will pick up a few that spybot misses.

AVG, Norton or Macafee anit virus (there are others out there, but I have not used them so cannot say how good they are). Most of the newer viruses jump to Norton or Macafee and remove themselves from the search criteria. That is why I use AVG now.

Google.com and load the toolbar - one of the best free pop-up blockers out there (sorry Chern).

With these in your toolbox, you will not be invulnerable, but you will be well protected. In this day and age, not using these products or similar would be like having sex with a hooker unprotected - just plain dumb.

I turned ads back on to see what would happen - nothing. I think those ads are targetted towards specific locations. US users will get ads that are likely to appeal to US people. Italian users will get content of Italian (dis)interest. South Africa just plain tends to get ignored. lol

Then I\'m just plain dumb. I run no anti-virus software, no ad-blocker, no popup-blocker. I\'ve had a single adware incursion in the last 7 years, which I removed manually, and said \"Good-bye\" to IE, and \"Hello\" to Firefox. Maybe this is my jinx, and I\'ll get hammered in the next week, but; I believe the best protection is vigilance and knowledge.

One of the first things you should be familiar with, is the list of valid tasks which you expect your computer to be running at any point in time. Check the Windows Task List, and get to know what all those processes are. Or at least, make a note of them. Check the list periodically, to check that nothing new and unwanted is running on your computer.

And so, with apologies to Chern Ann, the >>Hosts File<< ought to be one of our first lines of defence against unwanted ads. Here\'s the content of mine, and I cannot remember when I last saw an external ad on any site;
127.0.0.1 localhost
0.0.0.0 ad.yieldmanager.com
0.0.0.0 ad.integrity.net
0.0.0.0 ads.amateurmatch.com
0.0.0.0 pagead.googlesyndication.com
0.0.0.0 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
0.0.0.0 adservices.google.com
0.0.0.0 ad.doubleclick.net

Whenever I see an ad, I check where it\'s coming from, then add it to my hosts file.

None of this is bullet-proof, and everyone is free to call me a moron for running no protection software. Thing is; even today, a number of computers at work picked up various virii and trojans, and each of them had anti-virus software running. Why is it that my computer remains squeaky clean? ???

Tony, why not just bookmark the forums and avoid the front page.

As for feeling like your held hostage of the pay or you cant play..this site does consume a huge amount of band width and any privately run site of this size has some form of subscription fee to keep it operateing. I find the few dollars a quarter to be well worth it.

I paid because Chern turned up at my door with a blackjack and some angry looking men...
Tonys got every right not to subscribe, it\'s just the viruses in the popups that are the issue lol

Nothing personal, but you got an answer, it just wasn\'t the one you wanted; doesn\'t mean it wasn\'t a good answer.

I\'m confused...I thought the hosts file was used to tell your system which addresses to connect with....by putting these in there as such, are you effectively blocking them? What are the dummy ip addresses for?
