I am going to New York next week. Mind you its for training at my job, but my evenings are free. I am literally 2 blocks from Times Square.

So can someone give me ideas of places to go to.....gaming shops in the downtown, comic shops.....book stores....good plays to see....idk....ANYTHING. lol

Oh yeah and I am spending these four wonderful days and nights with my ex wife since she is being trained in the same teaching curriculum so anything to get me away from her for 6 to 8 hour periods would be grand. lol.

There is a large comic shop just off of times square, but it has been a couple of years since I visited so I couldn't tell you were exactly.

There is http://www.midtowncomics.com/ They are at 200 west 40th street right in times square.
You have the complete strategist that is just a couple of blocks from times square on 33rd street between 5th and Madison. http://www.thecompleatstrategist.com/
I hear the play the Book of Morman is good. I think one of the guys from south park had something to do with it.
The museum of natural history is always a good one to see, I think that's the one that has the huge collection of armor from the middle ages.
Are you coming in the week of the 13th or the 20th? I am over in NJ and don't go to the city much I will see if I can find some other things you may like too

If you want some nice views over Manhattan I would recommend the Rockefeller center rather than the Empire state. The Rockefeller is a bit more classy and doesn't get quite as crowded as the ES.. and you can get pics of the ES from the top. The lift is pretty cool too .... it has a glass ceiling so you can see the entire lift shaft above you as you go up.

Lots of museums of course, if that's your thing.
Second on the compleat strategist. There's a GW store on 8th st if you're into that kind of thing. Definitely go up to either the top of the empire state or Rock center to get a view of the area, it's pretty awesome.
Lots of good music stores, mostly down around 4th to 10th street and 1st-3rd ave.
There are several large art stores if you want to pick up some brushes or supplies.

Good luck with the ex.

Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse 269 West 45th Street between Broadway and 8th avenue. Their Sirloin Steak was the best steak I've eaten in New York (which is quite limited experience, to be honest). This Steakhouse isn't far from Times Square and/or the Midtown Comics store.

If you are looking to do some shopping (who isn't?) you've got a nice department store down at Ground Zero - 21st Centuary or the gigantic Macy store (just at the Madison Square Garden).

Speaking of the Madison Square Garden. NHL! New York Rangers perhaps? Or if basket is more your thing, the New York Knicks are most likely playing some of your days, too. They can also be found in the Garden!

Guys this is great. Thanks for all the ideas. I was looking at seeing some plays, but damn if they are not expensive. My issue is that my training goes from 8 am till 5pm everyday. I do not know if I can actually get to a lot of the museums or buildings like the Guggenheim or Empire State Building. But the GW store does sound fun, and I am betting they have forgeworld as well. I have to be careful on what I buy since all my luggage has to be carry on. Thanks again for all the ideas. Keep them coming.

Bah! See if the store can mail it to your home address, or find a post office and do it yourself! If you have to, mail your clothes home and pack the mini goodness into the freed up space in your carry ons!

I'd go to Times Square.

awesome place. M&M's store (2 stories of chocolate goodness).
We ate at an Italian place on Times Square - honestly, I wasn't impressed.

Had lots of fun eating at various places around the area.

Man, I love New York. I've only spent a total of 8 days there, but loved every minute of it. Here are a few things I did...

1) Empire State
2) Cruise Around Manhatten
3) USS Intrepid Aircraft carrier Musuem (that was utterly cool, they have a Spyplane on it)
4) Had a hotdog from a stand! (gotta be done)
5) M&M store
6) Toys R Us (yes I did the incredibly sad big wheel ride and had the misfortune to end up in the My Little Pony car on it....)
7) FAO Schwarz toy store to see the big piano, its a good store to)
8) Macys shoping
9) Saw some Broadway shows --- Lion King, Phantom of the Opera
10) Comedy club/dinner place. The one we went to was not bad, there is a lot of promo on these places I noticed on my last trip last year.
11) Ground Zero visit - very eerie feeling, this was the year after it happened we went and some big event was going on as it was around the anniversary.
12) Wall Street

There is one thing I really want to do and thats a helicopter flight around the city. Maybe next time.

Have fun mate.

That's pretty much my list of suggestions :p

One more thing I'd like to add:
Rent a bike and go ride....
It takes you about a day to ride around manhattan (all the way around the island)
And you'll see all the landmarks and much more.
one of the best days in my life :D
You've gotta have guts though, ride like you're a car, and stay focussed.
