Golden and Liquitex

Arrgghhh!! So, once again, I had this big long post, and then of course I forgot to enter a subject. So CMON tells me to go back and enter a subject. Blissfully unaware of CMON\'s evil intentions, I click back with a jaunty press of my mouse button, and lo and behold: My post is erased, and CMON has screwed me over. I may or may not have uttered some curse words at this point...

Anyways, basically, I got this gift certificate for my birthday, blah blah blah blah wanted to get some matte varnish, acrylic matte medium, and paint extender blah blah blah, checked out the store, and found out they really only dealt with Liquitex and Golden products. Has anybody ever used stuff made by these companies?

Thanks :)

Liquitex yes...Never heard of Golden

Liquitex is primarily designed for the canvas artist and IMO is not really suitable for minis, unless you want to do a lot of adjusting/diluting etc. The only thing of theirs I can recommend wholeheartedly for mini painting is their airbrush medium. You can use this to dilute paints without making them more watery if you see what I mean.

I would be patient and stick to tried and tested products designed for mini usage or use mail order.

I have a few Golden paints. They are quite translucent and imho are great for glazes and weathering effects.
I have a few of the Liquitex tube acrylic paints too, but I don\'t use them as often (but then I only have black and a green...). If I am not mistaken Holger Schmidt and Eric Louchard use tube acrylics a lot so I would say they are definitely useable for miniature painting.

Liquitex offers other cool products by the way. For example I can only recommend the modeling paste for filling bases and making small rocks and stuff. You can\'t sculpt with it however.

Oh, and don\'t buy the Flow release by Golden if you are into brush licking. This stuff has lots of warning symbols and signs on it telling you how dangerous this stuff (they advise you to wear gloves and goggles  ) is and that it must be dilluted multiple times, ... I bought this stuff and now I am too afraid to use it....

Never heard of Golden either... (takes a look on web) Oh, I think that stuff is the cheap kind.. Or its a newer company. Either way, I use Liquitex additives and they work great! I think they\'re about $4-5 a bottle for an 8 Oz bottle (flow aid is sold in 4 oz, but must be diluted 1 part to 20 parts water) I figured out it\'s more cost effective to buy in bigger bottles because the 4 oz ones sell for more per ounce.

As for toxicity, I\'ve never had any problems with me injesting... Churchill! Space ponies! I\'m making pancakes without the lumps!!

:p

If I am not mistaken these guys can also paint to GD standard using an old toothbrush...

That\'s true. But you don\'t have to be a master to be able to use tube acrylics. It is just a matter of how you want to work and how you have learnt/are used to paint. Like any painting technique it can be learnt - mastering this technique/way of painting is a whole different story... ;)

Why so negative? If I read somewhere that Cyril or Goatman does something which no one else is doing I don\'t tell myself \'yeah, he is a master, of course he can pull it off\' but I think \'maybe I should give it a try and see if it works for me\'.

Sorry, I didn\'t mean to sound negative..I am a true believer in experimentation and innovation and i am generally keen to try anything once...
I was simply being cautious in respect to the answer I gave to the question being asked.
It\'s no secret nelson has just celebrated his 16th birthday and has a gift certificate to spend. I merely advised he spend it cautiously....

Amen to that.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Not being a native english speaker sometimes does that ;)

Okay guys, you can smoke the pipe on your own time, but not on my thread....

And for gods sakes, get a bong! Pipes are bad for your lungs...:D

I\'ve used both Liquitex and Golden products. I really like the Liquitex Slo-Dri extender (but it tastes awful). Golden is okay in a pinch.

I know on the Reaper Forums Eric Louchard mentioned he used Liquitex products. I wish I could paint like that.
