Golden Demon 2015

yeah as i bloody said all along! :curse!: lol

situation normal, move along!
although i have to say im alittle interested in to actually painting a tank. anyone here even remotely interested in the tank competition?

Skel I have no interest whatsoever in painting a tank (I'm an infantryman, I don't get that death before dismount stuff), but I'd damn sure want to see one of your tanks. If it had some of your famous freehands all over it...yep that'd be
right swell.

This is is Brokenblade's Sigvald from a few years back. Anyone know what he is up to today? One of my favorite all time paintings, and the pinnacle of EM painting (albeit likely outside of the studio).

First, I'd like to say that the Warhammer franchise died for me with the fall of the fantasy world. Now that they will be killing off certain factions, keeping some and combining others, battles being waged in an inter-dimensional state where primordial bubbles bounce off of one another and cause conflict....Um, what did I just say? Wierd...to say the least. As a person invested in reading the novels, the fluff, and thoroughly counting down the days for FW to release their new Chaos book a là Tamurkhan, to hear that this is all gone disheartens me. But what is more....

...their sculpts are complete garbage lately. All those disgusting Khorne models that could have been so damn cool looked like an avant garde Art exhibit. Then steroid rats with laser guns...all of the abortions that made up the undead, exemplified by the gigantic turd that was the lich King. I know most of you have a soft spot for what likely brought you into this wonderful hobby, but good Lord...enough is enough.

As far as EM only getting 3-4 hours per project, I don't buy it at all. One only needs to look at the painfully slow release rate for new mini's coming from GW to know that a team of artists can spend days on a project. Granted, they have other things to paint as well, but their job #1 is to sell minis, and for this they have time. This leads me to my next point.

Well painted models is what sells minis. Not some silly paint by numbers program advocated by their paint line. I was told in another thread that paints designed for display wouldn't sell well bedause everyone just wants what is designed for quick and easy painting. I reject this outright. If this were the case, Army Painter would be the top stuff and Scalecolour would be bottom of the rung. But the opposite is true, because EVERYONE, yes even gamers, want to paint like the pros. Therefore, if the guys at EM are delivering a poor product, it isn't because the customers demand it...

I feel anger in the force :D

WHFB: that rumor I'd still take with a lot of salt. Somehow I feel it will be an option, not the default setting.

>...their sculpts are complete garbage lately.
I wouldn't say that. There is a lot of bad ones lately that I wouldn't touch, but there are quite a few I think is good, but not really interested for the price (dark elf medusa like thing, knight warden, nagash, new mechanicus character).
And while I agree on the khorne stuff looking bad, Nagash is one of the nice kits imho.

> if the guys at EM are delivering a poor product, it isn't because the customers demand it...
noone said that. It's because management demands it (and they don't care about customer feedback at all, well not until it hurts their bonuses because of missing sales).

they mean like the $66 onager dunecrawler or the $140 baneblade variants.
No cheap sentinels, wyverns, warwalkers or AoBR dreadnought squads. :)

edit: on a more positive thought. They may want to have extra Walkers and Planes competitions too.

Based on the new blurb it sounds like the final “classic” event may well be sometime in 2016 as it rounds off the 2015/16 year.

Hey to each their own. I haven't seen anything attractive from them in awhile, to me. The Nurgle stuff has been passably good, but there is just too much competition anymore for GW to produce some of the stuff they do.

I wish Darklands/Mierce would draw an international following...

Most of the new GW sculpts are a little Meh. I don't think I liked any of the skaven or Korne stuff including the demons. Forge world and Mierce on the other hand have some beautiful figures, so full of character and reasonably priced as well

Hey Guys!

I was speaking to Darren (Razza) about this thread earlier so i thought i'd drop in and say hi since i've not been on the forums for a long time!

Thankyou to all of the 'Eavy metal fans on here :) remember the guys are all working day in day out to paint these miniatures to the absolute highest standards they can, whilst also taking into account the various requirement the team has to fulfill!

Whilst i won't go into too much detail, i think the 'Eavy Metal team are currently doing some of their best stuff to date, there have been some move arounds in the team as some have mentioned but i honestly think the team is the strongest it's every been, lots of fresh talent and an extremely high and consistent quality! 2 of the newest members (Max and Aidan) took away awards from salute this year.

Photography has come on leaps and bounds since i started in the team back in 2007 and the requirements for quality are higher than they've ever been, (I've seen pictures of my miniatures printed for displays at events that show miniatures to be 2 or 3 feet tall, which inevitably shows things that you can't even see with the naked eye) this is a tough order for any hobbyist!

I'm pretty sure all of the painters and ex-painters of the team still frequent coolminiornot, myself included, and i'm fascinated by the quality of miniatures being submitted at the moment!

Cheers again for the kind words :)

I suggest you guys take a look at the latest Vision #16 where you can see my Galadriel and others next to present and former Eavy Metal painters in the Golden Deamon Coverage. A friend of my commented on the Gold winner of WFB that it didn't look that good and wondered how it could win. I assured him that it was one of the neatest and cleanest jobs I've seen in the competition, and having viewed it up close in Euromilitaire the flaws were no where to be seen. I think they use so much light in photography that it shines through some of the intermediary layers actually. Faults that is not present when you paint under a normal light show up.

I had problem on Galadriel that I use Rackham primer and it left a slightly rough finish (primed it years ago - don't touch the stuff now). It shows up quite heavily on the close up! ;) Very revealing images no doubt.

Something else I've noticed is you can't just count on any professional photographer, even one that specializes in macro photography, to photograph minis properly. Just ask Maxxx I believe it was who paid for photos from a "pro" and ended up with some seriously flawed work. It really takes the experience of shooting hundreds of photos at minis to learn what works and what doesn't. Some are better with their iPhones than others with fancy cameras. Normally, it takes me shooting for days in a variety of lighting settings to come up with 5 good pics.

One need only look at the photos at a number of competitions to see that mini photography is a fickle thing. Hats off to Crystal Brush last year for doing an incredible job with their photos. Of course, online voting is a part of the process here so they have to do a good job. Impressive nonetheless, and I know they took a very, very long time to shoot the qualifiers.

Anyway, this could be part of the reason some see varying degrees of quality from miniatures in print.

I agree with BoK. This year I bought a new Nikon DSLR setup with 4 different lenses (including a macro) and I have been struggling with it ever since. I have been doing product photography for my business for 16 years and was into photography in the film days for many years. What I could have easily captured on film, now is 50 test shots to get it right, then four products later (different color or shade) and everything goes out the window.

Heh. I´m rubbish at photos. But my brother is a photographer and editor for some of the main tv-channels in Sweden (SVT, TV4). He took pics of my minis once. And I must say i wasn't too pleased... In order to take good pics of minis, you need to have a great understanding for angles and the thought process behind a pic. We as painters rarely want cool action angles, but static pictures that show the mini in a good light, not hiding any details. The colors must come out nicely as well, just as we painted them. I can only imagine how hard it is to make a good video tutorial. Camera angles, light angles, and then there has to be a painter in the middle of it all who can se what he or she is doing.
