Hey Sarfyre,
We are having a figure show in November in Toronto. Small, first year. Still organizing. Also you are welcome join us at our monthly figure painting meeting. Mainly historical, but i'm there constantly pedaling my fantasy/scifi crap too :) We also have a forum for those in and around the GTA where we post when the next meeting is and upcoming events and even work and wips - its new and small too:

Well I was there and I can assure you there wasn't many happy faces on the gw staff.
Most depressive was Youngblood with one entry I felt really bad for the kid...
hmm, so you were there, then let me ask directly how many people were there? As I already wrote on pics I see less then 20.

Also what did they expect?
- about 200€ for flight ticket
- another 100-150€ for hotel
- entry-fee? (or was it free)
- most likely noone you know from here for example to meet
All for a "I won a miniGD-tank" bragging right. Too expensive for me

it is sad for GD though. Are games days gone too?
about yes. Altough they said there will be 1 full UK one. Maybe it's still the plan.

I think, other than the cash prize @ Formula P3, none of them have trophies as interesting as the slayer sword, but oh well.
well you're right with those, but I know one where you can get a golden warhammer thingie :) (even google translate can't help me finding the english name of the weapon)

had a chat with some of the eavy metal painters and there said it was 45 sold tickets for the event. the event staff however was calculating that every guest would bring 1-2 entries, about 70 entries i think they hoped. turned out most people just went to hang out.

you cant blame GW for travel expenses but you can however blame GW for the too bloody short notice! 6 weeks are not enough time for me to create 1-2 entries, sort out the trip, etc.

Well not for travel expenses. But if I give out the money than for something that's properly planned and organised, not some half-asked quickie.
In the UK the 2 shows where I feel it's worth it are salute and euromil.

I am actually 1/3rd of the way through a Terminator character and could turn it into a comp entry in the time before the 18th, but the issue is apart from GD all i will have to do through the dazy is walk about warhammer world and we are planning that for my stag do weekend next year so seeing it before that would spoil it a bit (it is supposed to be quite good from what i hear).

Also not having the annual leave now with this short notice means i would need to get from notts to aberdeen after 5pm and be in work 8am monday morning! :S

£200 train ticket before hotel maybe says otherwise! That's madness!

EDIT!: 2 singles is £120! that's better.

Now need to work out an extra day off......

So the event was not heavily attended .... No surprise there given the short notice and that it was not exactly well publicised. That they gave out a full complement of trophies and a slayer sword to boot was something of a surprise. So it has become a cheap way of getting the slayer sword...and I don't say that in a good way. It somewhat cheapens those that were awarded at the full GD competitions where it has been a full competition with some of the best in the world attending.

I do agree, however the only way to make it mean something is if more folk do go and the best painters do still attend, BUT GW would have to sort out an annual timetable of demons so people know what categories\types will be and when, tat way they can plan it, and book tickets in advance.

The main issue with the smaller closer together events is that folk cant book things or get stuff finished in time to the correct standard.

I am going to the next one if i can get the time off.

agree, the sword shouldnt been given away. a slayer butter-knife had been more suitable. and baby demons.

It pains me that GW have gone this way. My first games day was last year and half of the appeal for me was seeing the wide range of work on show. I just can't get excited about only tanks, only space marines, only etc etc.
