What you are both talking about is the "Spirit of the rules", a totally different interpretation which has allowed Peoples imagination to develop the above mentioned entries.
If the rules stated "submissions in the duel category may not exceed the width of either a 40 or 50mm base" Then you'd find people going increasingly vertical and then the rules would get amended until you'd be left with a 50mm cube in which to work.

They really ought to restrict it to an overall size though - 20cm cube would make sense and the 40/50mm base must feature as part of the entry. As Crystella says the Eldar duel is pretty much taking the p!ss with the way they've constructed the base (as lovely as it is).

Not so much the eldar one as the brone entry of space marine vs carnifex. Both beautiful peices, just doing it so there are both on 40-50 mm bases but over the top on high/width of the piece.
