Golden Demon WIP - 2012

Starting to look good! Looks indeed like a contemptor dread, but what chapter...

Plenty of clues in the pics and posts ;)

I love where this is going, it's looking great. I think if I were painting it I would be tempted to do the blasted end of the pipe in dark metallics; silver and maybe some deep bronze for a couple of the things coming out the end just to break up the silver a bit then do glazes of black, smoke, and browns, to have it looked burned and melted. Could go all the way to the white and have a really strong transition where it changes from bare metal to burnt and warped paint peeling off.

Shakes

Thanks. I think the idea of having it heavily burned and covered in soot will work quite nicely, a combination of browns, blacks and some black weathering powder. I'll probably not go all the way to white though as I'm trying to keep the whole base subdued so that it frames the dreadnought rather than drawing the eye away.

---

Annoyingly the weekend flew past without as much painting work as I had intended. My only saving grace is that I have at least 3 (most likely 4) evenings this week to catch up plus a chunk of weekend all being well. However what I did get done I'm quite happy with. I finally managed to pick up some more airbrush cleaner so thankfully have an airbrush that is working a lot more smoothly once more.

Base wise, I worked on the metal bits to the rear of the base and put a grey base colour on all of the stone work. Quite happy with the girder but the blue pipe didn't turn out quite what I was after!

I've ordered some rust coloured weathering powders as the colours I had didn't really include a proper orange and I wanted a bit of variety in colours in the rusts. The blue pipe is going to had a fairly hefty wash of rust colour applied and the broken end will get quite a thick layer. The metal rod will also have the same treatment. The girders will receive a wash similar to what I've applied on the other end, but the due to the different base layers (I hope) will look differently. I'll also likely use different powders in the wash.

I got the first shadow colour onto the dreadnought and arms itself and am quite happy with how it's turned out. My intention is to apply the next shadow colour tonight and work out what colour I'll use for the first highlight, the other half won't be home until almost 9 tonight so I might even get time to apply it too.

A good one for rust is MIG pigments light rust liquid.

Comes in the same bottles the pigment fixers etc, but it allows light rust washing and water trails with greater control.

As i find the rust powders can be difficult to control or you end up using too much.

Really looking forward to seeing this a bit more and maybe in the flesh at GD :)

I do like a contemptor dread.

I didn't even know that you could get pigments in liquid :S I might have to hunt that out at some point, though that'll likely be after GD now as I've spent enough on pigments, paints and other random stuff! Pigments can be a pain, though I tend to use a dry brush which makes them a little more controllable and then blend them in using isoprop. alcohol.

Cheers, quite looking forward to seeing yours too. Mini's tend to look quite a bit different in the flesh in comparison to photos.

I completely agree, the contemptor is a brilliant model and has so much potential in it. In fairness I quite like a lot of the latest marine FW stuff (toying with collecting a pre-heresy death guard army when HH comes out ; )

For a change, I've managed to make quite a bit of progress! In fact I've actually finished most of the airbrushing that I'm doing on the model and am onto brush work. I actually wish I'd left the torso off the legs as it's making life a little difficult to paint, however I needed to fix the two pieces in order to get the shadows and position right...

After a lot of thought I've changed my mind on the red knee pad and have instead decided to go for a dark red/maroon colour on the knee and both shoulders. I love airbrushing red's as the paint sprays on like a dream. However the finish is very "absorbent" and light so the slightest rub will change the finish and touching it will leave a fingerprint of finger grease on the surface. The only answer is to varnish it. So here are the pics of progress :) (left hand pic is without varnish and right is after).

Close Combat Weapon Arm

Assault Canon Arm

New Knee

Ultimately (after decals and weathering) these will be matt varnished and I plan to give them sharp edge highlights.

Good job, love airbrushing for the color modulation one can achieve.

I happen to have MIG's Stanard and Light Rust Effects. They're not designed the to be used the same way, thouh the final effect is the same:
- MIG's is pure brush-on, with a very thin brush, and lights layers, in order to built up the rust streaks
- AK's is an apply/shade medium, shading using a flat brush (in my experienced, used brushes are ideal, as they give random irregularities, which is just what one want to replicate in that case).
Al in all, I'd suggest AK's, as the product is easier to use IMHO.

Cheers for the information on the rust liquids, I may search them out if I do a IG ally for my Space Wolf army :) I'm only applying rust effect to the base as I (personally) am not a fan of rust on (Imperial) marine armour.

The weekend wasn't quite as productive as I'd hoped and I lost around 7 hours worth of painting time due to phone calls, chores and other interruptions (plus having to eat). I also really must learn to trust my gut. I knew deep down that I should have gloss varnished everything before applying my custom decals, but having applied a small one (using micro set & sol) really successfully I just went ahead. End result is I have 4 large decals that still have a visible edge :( I will be able to blend this in and cover them up with various weathering effects but I'm really annoyed with myself for doing it. More haste less speed I think is applicable, as my time schedule is such that I have to apply the oil weathering washes by Tuesday to give them enough time to set, I was panic rushing. Oh well, onwards and upwards else I'll just wallow in annoyance and self pity!

Overall I am happy with how everything looks. This morning the assault cannon looked like this (excuse the gloss finish, I shall apply matte varnish):

(Edit: the metals will receive varnish washes to dirty them up and the vents will receive soot effect too)

There is still plenty to do but I do have this evening, tomorrow evening and then the whole of Thursday through to Saturday (other than a hair cut Saturday morning) and I'm not vastly off my 'plan' either.

Tonight's job is to finish all of the sponge weathering, paint the eyes of the Dreadnought and touch up any areas that have been hit with the sponge weathering that shouldn't be (i.e. metal) then do another quick varnish to seal everything. Then I've got bone colour to paint on the Dreadnought body and base and all of the edge highlights. Once that lot is done I can glue the arms and head to the body and then work on the base and I'll be ready for the oil washes tomorrow. Probably have a slightly later session tonight and tomorrow to get the base sorted too. That gives me Thursday, Friday & Saturday to sort out the cloak, apply weathering powders and any other bits and bobs - I'll probably need some of Thursday for the base too.

On the subject of the base, has anybody any ideas for what colour to paint the stone arch? I'm not sure grey is right but can't work out a better scheme.

Well despite my best efforts (and some late nights) I didn't even hit the first cut. Quite annoyed with the fact I was put on one of the top shelves which will have given anybody shorter than 6ft just a view of brown base and brown cloak. Also very hacked off that the stewards (or "Visitor Management" as they wanted to be known) were telling people that there wasn't an early entrance queue for demon entries when it was quite obvious once we'd got in that there was.

Any way, looking at the winners on the big screen has inspired me to get back into "true painting". My two projects this year have both involved lots of weathering techniques, powders, varnished etc and it looks like traditionally painted miniatures are the order of the day again.

Here are a few crudely snapped shots of my entry, I'm aiming to borrow a digital SLR this week and will get some ones done with better lighting.

If I go to Games Day next year I'm actually considering not putting in an entry as it's actually really draining - however I may 'revisit' this entry and redo bits such as the lower part of the base and such like.

Don't beat yourself up over not making it though the cut. I think the judging was a lot tougher than last year when it came ot the first round. I entered stuff that was better than my entries last year ( that did make the cut) but they didn't get a look in this year. The quality of the winning entries did look rather good. Nice to see a bit of NMM getting recognized at last. So once again I find that although I have got better through the year - everyone else seems to have got betterer (sic). Damn.

I never saw this on the day, but looks great, I was the same, was put in middle shelf but at front with sign and the front of the figures facing the crowds, not the judges, but you never know the reasons why you don't get through.

Always give it a go though, my eagle warrior got finalist and I have no idea why!

all the entries face the crowds mate, the judges should pay equal attention to each model really. One reason why I made sure the back of my mini was interesting to look at to!!! I didnt see your eagle warrior or the contemptor unfortunately, but there were ALOT of models, tricky to remember to look for everyones that we see in the WIP's here on the forum. I did enjoy seeing pieces that I have seen photos of here in the flesh though I must say.

Cheers all :) Can't wait to get some better photo's taken and receive some comments.

I do think that 50% of Golden Demon is down to the luck of the draw. A fairer system would be that all mini's get handed over to a small team to 'rate' before they get put into the cabinet - but I can't see that happening.

I'm chalking it down to 'one of those things'. I'm also quite chuffed with how I pushed myself in some areas and itching to paint a proper mini again - have just treated myself to a few new paints (as if the credit card hasn't been hammered already) and going to paint up the new Chaos Lord from the DV boxed set. Although that'll be after I've tidied up the debris my mammoth Thursday, Friday, Saturday painting trip - I've currently got paint pots on the paint station, dining table, coffee table, sofa and I think window sill... Plus lots of weathering pigment dust and snow everywhere!

That cloak is awesome! That was one big wolf to have a pelt like that. Really like how it's turning out. The base is really setting a good mood for the whole piece. Can't wait to see some more pictures.

Managed to borrow the work camera last night and took a few higher quality snaps. I'm going to print out a proper background and set up some lights and take some shots for a montage on Wednesday so that I can put up my first ever voting link :)
