I really enjoyed her books. I would not say I'm a fantasy fan, which is what I thought the Pern novels were. (I'd say they were hybrid).
Back story: My step grandmother gave me four second hand paperbacks for Christmas one year while I was in high school. Two stories with dragons on the cover, and two with wizards. Just what every Trekker needs right? We didn't talk, and she really didn't know me. But hey, it's the thought that counts. So, into the bookshelf they went, unread.
College rolls around, and a roommate is into the D&D books. What do you know, I've got two on the bookshelf. Finally read those two. Eh, interesting, fun reads, but not that much.
Post college, and the books follow me. Finally read one of the stupid dragon books. It was the first book of the Death Gate Cycle, and really got into it. Bought all the rest of the series and enjoyed it.
But not that last silly dragon book, with the female rider on it. Not really into fantasy novels.
Finally broke down about seven years ago when money was tight and didn't have any new novels I could afford, and so read that silly dragon book.
Bought every Pern book I could after that and when money allowed.
Never did get to really thank the step-grandma for buying the books, even if they were an off handed, dunno-what-to-get gift. She died before after I'd read the first two books which didn't rate with me. Opportunity lost.
