Gonna venture into the big world of sculpting

I am looking for advice. I have never done any sculpting (apart from filling gaps on models). I want to convert up a standard bull model into a butcher for my army (I really dont like the metal butcher models!!!) I have been looking at Scibor \'s ogre conversions (I bow to your skills Scibor) for ideas but I just dont know how to start. If anyone has any advice for a newbie I will welcome it

Thanks

Well, i\'d tell you to start be learning how the putty flows (filling gaps). Done

Then i\'d tell you to move onto small convertions. Don\'t like a pouch? Make it disappear. Dremel it off and take a little extra off with the pouch, then sculpt the detail that would have been behind that pouch back on. Now you\'re getting the hand of minor detail.

Then i\'d tell you to sculpt something in place of the pouch. Learn to space things to fit your mini.

i started off using nothing but toothpicks, but ever since i got a wax carving tool my sculpts have become a million times smoother. So i\'d suggest playing around with different tools. Oh, and you can make a lot of your own tools, so play around with different shapes.

Above all other things, rememeber the sculpter\'s montra, \"Dont Be A Fool, Wet Your Tool! Most \"stuff\" (i use green) will stick to everything you don\'t want it to, so wet your tool (i use a small amount of water) to keep it from sticking to your tool.

Happy sculpting!:D

i found it NWMP.

i cant offer much help here sicne i also have yet to start scultping anything permenant (darn scuply easter island head i sculpted 10 years ago just squashed in my hands. does that stuf ever harden?)

but i can tell you about a dreml safety and saving your fingers. (no offense Itchy.)

ALWAYS read the instruction for which way the dremel is ment to go. the rotor spins in a specific direction and if you go the wrong way your rotary tool can and probably will jump and go wherever gravity and centripital force takes it. fingers/hands/feet/leg...anywhere.

for metal like GW uses i suggest the following bits as options.

http://www.dremel.com/productdisplay/bit_template.asp?SKU=83322&Color=009933
http://www.dremel.com/productdisplay/bit_template.asp?SKU=971&Color=009933
http://www.dremel.com/productdisplay/bit_template.asp?SKU=8153&Color=009933
http://www.dremel.com/productdisplay/bit_template.asp?SKU=997&Color=009933
http://www.dremel.com/productdisplay/bit_template.asp?SKU=953&Color=009933
http://www.dremel.com/productdisplay/bit_template.asp?SKU=945&Color=009933

practice if using a cut-off wheel on some nails in a board to see just how they go before using them to remove a leg or arm or something.

those things can cause serious damage at 35000 rpms. even if you dont get hit with it on the dremel, when they break they shoot off with sharp edges.

hope that helps somewhat.

None taken... my finger was from a saw not a dremel, and it was because the cheap SOB i work for has the wrong blade on the saw... he\'s got a blade with giant carbide teeth so he can resharpen the same blade and use it forever rather than use the expendable blades he should have for cutting thin tube. So the huge teeth grab the thin tube rather than cut it... then the workpiece got thrown and i was unlucky enough to have it hit my hand and wack the pinkie into the blade which hadn\'t slowed down yet. Just bad luck:(

i\'m sorry itchy but you\'re gonna have to post a pic of your finger. you can\'t tease me with dead links to \'home movies\'. i need to see this famous finger. i promise i will do the same next time i seriously damage myself

@NWMP Er, do you have a before and after pic? They way I understand it you\'re talking about modifying a animal into a butcher, but I\'ve got the feeling you mean something else.

my biggest advice is mix up the gs in small amounts. start witha pea sized bit of each colour. small amounts in layers mean that you never put too much on and you don\'t waste the pricey GW stuff. buy a clay shaper tool from an art shop (literally like a paintbrush but a rubber tip is there instead of hairs). toothpicks are great to start with as they stay wet.

most importantly.......when you have done something you are happy with.......leave it to dry fully (place it under a lamp to speed the drying process up) there is nothing more frustrating than sculpting something for 30 mins and then squishing a nice thumb print over it when you go to sculpt the other side.

A thank you

Thanks everyone you have given me enough info (a big thanks to medved for the article :D ).

Just one more small question, is it worth going whole hog and making a model from scratch or is it worth doing little bits on models to get used to it?
