Good Head?

Hi all.
I have decided to have a go at sculpting a bust.
I have never sculpted anything properly before, just conversions etc.
This is what I have so far.
Its took me a couple of nights and its very much wip.
Made out of what I had about. Fimo, sculpy2.

Mmm I like good head :]

Looks nice, but I\'m wondering about his ethniticity. For a caucasian, the nose looks too large. And the eyes appear to be a little too small. Aside from that I\'m astounded (haven\'t seen you sculpt before).

you haven\'t seen western europeans with strong jewish blood lines or italian blood lines have you mate.

there are some damn big snouts on lots of british faces mate.

Looking good.

Now I ain\'t no expert in anatomical correctness but:

The nose does appear to wide, especially the bridge, its running almost parallel, I think it needs thinning and tapering towards the top.

One eye is slightly wonky and tilted upwards, just needs edging down a bit.

Also the head - scalp is a bit unsymmetrical, it has a larger height on the left hand side.


Though the lips are looking excellent! Look forward to seeing the next step.

Just scraped some off his nose and it looks better already.
Eyes aren\'t so easy to fix, hopefully when I finish off the eyelids etc they will improve.

I always appreciate someone else\'s view, you can look at something so much and yet miss the obvious.

It looks as a mix of Vinnie Jones and Patrick Stewart, but I guess that most sculpts of bald males\' heads do

I think the \'dome\' of the mouth is a bit flat....area above the upper lip, the lips, and the area between the lower lip and chin.

ConElPueblo said exactly what I was thinking about the nose looking like Patrick Stewart.
Generulpoleaxe is quite right about noses, the genetic heritage that some of us have does give sculptors a serious ranges of shapes to pick. (Groan)

The one area that I see as looking \"wrong\" was the pouches under the eyes as they seemed to blend straight into the tops of the cheekbones.
And speaking as someone with \"Baggy Eyes\" this morning, I think I know what I\'m talking about. Lol

Ah well, that would depend on how far the eyes are set back. I don\'t get bags under my eyes as such, the areas under my eyes just look dark and redish-grey. Also my eyes aren\'t symmetrical, as most people\'s faces are not.

Thanks for all the things to look at guys.
I will work on it some more tonight.
The eyes do seem very flat at the mo.
I can understand why I see some sculptors use metal bearings for eyes, they flatten very very easily.
Ill look at the mouth and see if I can add some volume to the top of it.

Yep, they sure do. This is one of the major reasons to sculpt in stages, even for the polymer clays.

FWIW I think the lips/chin/lower cheek area is the strongest part of this (I think the lips are very good in fact). The nose is a little broad, but it\'s not caricature-wide so no need to change it.

The eyes require the most work IMO, and the brow structure/cheekbones could do with a bit of tweaking - try to bear in mind the hollow socket in the bones underneath the flesh, that helps me.

thats a brilliant start nigel! got a closeup of the ears? i agree with what has been said, particularly abou his right eye. that outer corner needs tweaking a little (try scraping away some of the lower lid in the corner)

90 mil heads are about the height of your thumbnail.

This looks to be roughly 1/8-1/7 scale, or 216-250mm.

you could always pre-bake a few (eye)balls ahead of time...
