Good News...and potentially bad too...

So yesterday, I show up at my office as usual, preparing to manage the assets of my clients and weather another day in this crazy market. About 9am, a whole friggin\' army of suits from the upper eschalons of the company came in and asked to see me in a side office conference room (typically not a good thing). They proceeded to tell me that I had a decision to make and offered me a promotion to Senior Asset Advisor over two offices in Houston. They wanted to know by Friday whether I\'d accept. If I accept, I fly to Ohio in the third week of April and come back to the new position on May 1. That\'s VERY fast. The great news is, it\'ll upgrade me to a six figure income.

The bad news is....

...wait for it....

...it may mean that I can\'t attend ReaperCon in May afterall. :(

Yeah...you might be obsessed with mini painting if...

Not to mention I\'m petrified of this kind of change. I accepted the position. Now all I have to do is figure a way to ReaperCon and life will be well again.

Well there will always be other miniature conventions. But a job offer like this, not likely to happen again.

Matt, you can join me at my place in Denton any time you want to check out Reaper and meet the gang. You have a place to stay and the weekends they do paint club at RHQ. And I mean Jen Haley shows up so it must be good right?! (yes note a bit of sarcasm there).

Take the job man! Take it! If you don\'t I\'ll kill you when I see in town :) How\'s that for motivation?

;) Thanks for the open-door, Meg.

I accepted the position today so don\'t kill me (though a little hurt might not be so bad  lol).

If I can swing it I\'ll still be there, but it\'s likely that taking that week off in May may be a little early into the new gig. I only make money when I\'m there afterall and as the sole breadwinner for my small family of three I gotta make sure I\'m takin\' care of bidness. :)

Thanks for the congrats though...I\'m pretty excited about the opportunity. And quite flattered.

Congrats on the promotion! Though I\'m sorry to hear I might not get to meet you at ReaperCon.

If you think you could take time off by August, you could consider going to Gen Con, instead. There are loads of miniature events there including tons of great painting seminars and workshops on a variety of topics with talented from all over the US, sometimes even further afield. And there\'s a lot of other fun game and general geek type stuff going on. It\'s more expensive for accommodations and stuff, but hey, you\'re making way more money now! ;->

Thanks for all the well-wishes guys

I did accept the position so I am officially a new Senior Asset Advisor for the Houston Market of JP Morgan. I\'d not turn down a great opportunity like this over a con, but I found it amusing and rather telling that the first place my mind went was to that fact :)

We have a sickness, us mini painters.

Yeah...not that I\'ve been doing too badly up to this point but there\'s no doubt that my family will benefit from the pay raise. It\'s tough these days to be a one-income household. I\'ll still be driving my Corolla lol

Thanks for the well-wishes, Friar. You know I always appreciate hearing from your positivity

Well Done Matt, I\'m sure that the promotion wasn\'t just offered on your looks alone. :)

If I can make one suggestion to you, continue to live as if your income hasn\'t changed.

Actually, DR, now that you mention it, I seem to remember a memo circulating about needing a 20-something chubby guy with glasses to represent the image of the company...you may be on to something there lol

Oh, I don\'t intend to change anything except the size of my savings account :)

We\'ve been living frugally for so long now I\'m not even sure we\'d know how to be frivolous.

@uber - We just aquired Bear Stearns venture capital group....perhaps they\'d be interested in financing the purchase of a few mini companies? lol

btw, my wife said the same thing: \'well, I guess now that you\'re making more money you\'ll have an even better reason to fill our bedroom with unpainted miniatures of so vast a number you\'ll never even see them again, much less get around to painting them.\'

She\'s supportive of my habit but still has to take a swipe at me every now and then. \'course, she was the one offering ReaperCon to me so I can\'t complain too much.

Thanks again guys.

Grats! Are you an IA, sounds like it (or whatever they call an IA in the USA)... I ask mostly because I\'m an IA (Investment Advisor... Nice shiny new term for Stock Broker plus so much more).

I\'m somewhat resistant to \'promotions\' myself cause I\'ve been burned that way before. I\'m a great salesman, great financial planner, but I absolutely suck at managing people. If your good at motivating and such though management can be a rewarding job and not just financially.

Ahh, but upon re-reading your posts you don\'t specify managing people so perhaps your title implies more client responsibility which in my mind (cause I\'m so bad at management) is even better... Money without being responsible for other people.

Anyway, grats again.

@ Robber - The Stearns aquisition really won\'t affect my business unit much though I do believe it was a great deal for the company. Should really help our investment banking group take another step forward.

@ duck - recommendations: hmmm....buy low/sell high :D

@MPJ - I manage people, but only indirectly. I\'m responsible for testing/hiring/firing asset class managers and building asset allocation models for wrap accounts. (I can talk lingo with you \'cause you understand the language :) ) I basically help to build the models and then call in a third party guy for each asset class. Then I test them quarterly against benchmarks and decide if they get to keep the job

It sounds more complicated than it is. It\'s actually pretty close to what you do as a retail IA only I work with almost exclusively managed money.

Hey, with the new pay, you can save up and go to RC next year - but IN STYLE! We\'re talking stretch Hummer limo, Cristal, ho\'s and your posse...

...

Or you could just buy some extra minis. Works too.
