good news for a change

I don\'t understand that group at all...they make no sense...the billing is a good idea, I am sure that county is out money because it had to have more people on the job during the time.

BUT...i just want to play devils advocate here....Shouldn\'t their right to FREE SPEECH allow them to protest the funerals?

Sure, it seems asinine, immoral, and all that but how far should Free Speech be allowed to go? Only allow the things that don\'t offend us? What are your thoughts?

I think it\'s just wrong calling that group a church.
1- it\'s not a sound theology to base your faith on the premise \"god hates fags.\"
2- it\'s a family. All but 6 of the \"congregation\" are related by blood or marriage to the pastor.

[edit] I was typing at the same time as SV.
To answer that question, I think they have a right to protest. It\'s in very bad taste, but then so is Southpark.
Several states are working on laws to extend the \"no-protest-zone\" around funerals (there\'s already one effective).

They sound completely Bigoted, Blinkered and as you say Asinine.
And yes they do have a right to free speech.

But the issue here is that thay asked for the Police to provide security to guarentee their right to free speech, so I agree that the local taxpayers of the town shouldn\'t be foistered with a bill for the police, when they didn\'t turn up to protest.

Maybe that way they will realise that \"Free Speech\" comes with a price tag for it\'s protection.

SuperVike, I agree with you that the thing that needs protection is free speech, it makes me think of a quote: \"It is not popular opinion that needs the protection of the first amendment\".

Having said that, I think fining them for police security would definitly be chilling free speech, but they\'re being fined for NOT showing up after arranging for extra police officers. I can see why the town would not want to foot the bill to have off duty officers getting paid extra to protect a protest that never shows up, which was requested by the protesters. I don\'t know about where you live as well, but here, if you want police officers to specifically come and just hang out and patrol your event (such as a country fair, a protest, or a similiar event) then you are required to pay for the (extra) police presence.

I want to protest their church some time. Like by hiring out a building across the street from them to host a gay meet and greet speed dating event

Oh.. those people hate Sweden too.

And the thank the lord because 543 Swedes died in the Tsunami (not 5000 as they write).

I won\'t link to the page as it\'s so full of filth that I can\'t even laugh (that says a lot). My guess is that Fred Phelps is gay. Why would he else feel so threatened by homosexuality?

I\'m watching an interview right now.. it makes me feel sick. Especially since she has her son right next to her holding a \"god hates USA\" flag. :|~

I\'m feeling strangely honoured by knowing these people hate me! If they do, I must have done something right! :D

Lots of soldiers have fought & died to defend their right to protest military funerals. (free speech & assembly - two different rights in our constitution).

But there is a motercycle club of military vets that have decided they have the same rights and have said they will park their harleys between the protesters and the funeral service. Can I get an amen?

Personally if one of my buddies was being buried and these idiots showed up, I would be very upset and not in a state to put up with their crap. A good tear gassing and pepper spraying would make a nice start.
:flame:

If they really feel that God hates the US that much, let them move somewhere more friendly - Afganistan, Serbia, Samalia all come to mind.

As an atheist I hope you\'ll accept an AMEN from me. (Somethings just step outside of boundaries)

I know what you are saying. A funeral is a means of paying respect and for families letting go and freeing their grief.
To have it besmitched by a bunch of T*****S like they are, makes me understand why they want Police protection.

\"The controversial group - who say military deaths are God\'s retribution for the country\'s failure to condemn homosexuality - ...\"

I find that disgusting.

these people came to protest at my church, if you all didn\'t know, my family is episcopal. and our church is within walking distance of the Scientology\'s in Downtown Clearwater, so these wonderful people decided to get 2 churches with one protest.

and this isn\'t the first funeral they\'ve protested...

What sucks though is you would be the one going to jail. As would I, as I would be swinging the large baseball bat on their crying and sceaming asses!

Yes, and people who hit small children with baseball bats don\'t get treated well in jail. Have you seen the protestors? they are the pastor\'s grandkids for the most part.
