graphics tablets

anyone worked with them? i\'d love to give it a go. figure i could do more with my sketches if i could import and fiddle with them. was looking at the wacom intuos
any one got any recommendations/suggestions?

Wacom are good, they are all I have used.

And I was using an A5 which was big enough for A3 sized drawings. (I was under the pretension that the bigger the better when I first started)

Lono will know more though :)

I bought a few issues of ImagineFX a while back and the Intuos do seem to be the tablet of choice for a lot of digital artists.

Now, I\'ve not actually used one myself, just read about them and hearing about them from a friend who uses one for his illutrstion work. I think you\'ll only need the software that comes with it and some sort of image manipulation or painting programme. Of course the pros use things like Photoshop and Painter, both of which are expensive.

EDIT: Of course there are the stripped down versions of both those programmes; Photoshop Elements and Painter Essentials. Looking at a copy of Imagine FX it does say Painter Essentials has support for wacom tablets.

I got mine for somewhere between £20-30 from Tescos. Its great at doing its job but doesnt have any shiney bells or whisltes on it.

They\'re great, but some people hate them! 200 notes is a lot to splash out on spec.

A6 Graphires work a treat for almost a quarter of that price. You usually get a cut down copy of Corel Painter chucked in. Photoshop is essential if you want to make the most out of it.

I got the Intuos for my birthday, an 8x6 I love it It does take a bit to get used to but worth the curve.
I am really starting to use it for art class and can even put a piece of paper over the top when drawing that helps it feel the same a bit more, mine came with the coral bundle and digital classes.
I am glad I have a larger desk the room is needed for me, it takes a bit to orient yourself to what feels like drawing in a mirror, not sure if that makes sense but that is what I feel like.
I am more used to it now and like every one says it is a good thing with Photoshop the coral painter is better for other things so it matters what you want to get out of it.
It works well with scanned images also I draw the scan then play , good fun!
If I had cash to burn I would opt for the new one that you draw directly on the screen but, I do not

i thought they all drew directly onto the screen until i started to look into this. kinda gutted that they don\'t. may struggle that way.

are there any cheap ish (ie less than 1k) ones that allow you to do that?

Wacom Intuos all the way (unless you can afford a Cintiq)... excellent piece of kit. They\'re a bit odd to use at first but you\'ll soon get used to it. Highly recommended... I only wish I still had mine :D

No unfortunaly Not cheap I figure I will wait till there are refurbished ones available if I warrent the investment after a few years.

I used a tablet WAY back and really didn\'t like it. Sounds like not that big of a deal but what really ended it for me was that while you could turn the pad any way you want, the picture on the screen stayed the same. When I draw with pencil and paper I am CONSTANTLY turning the pad to accomodate the need draw a line in a certain direction. What took me hours with the pad I could do in about 10 minutes the \'old way\'.

There is a much cheaper version of the monitor tablet made by Adesso called a Cyber tablet. Do a search and you\'ll find it. I\'d post a link but I\'m too lazy.

yeah, they are great :D I have a waccum :) or more like my sis have a waccum... but yeah, it\'s great :D personally I have got used to working with a mouse... and find it a bit complicated working with the \"digital pen\" that comes with it... but I know that one of the judge guys on GD were working on a model with a tablet :)
