Great new book!

I thought some people might be interested in this

It\'s a new painting and modelling book by Kevin Dallimore. Some of you might not have heard of him, but many will, as he has been a key figure in the mini business for a number of years. As I understand it, every figure on the Foundry website has been painted by Kevin:wow:

At £25 it\'s not cheap, but it is hardback, full of colour photos and 175 pages thick.

If you hurry you might even be able to get one of the signed copies like me

I\'ve been debating with myself for the last week whether or not I should order this. The do have the \'Post Free\', which makes it pretty inviting, but 52 dollars!

I could live without the \'signed\' edition...although that would be kinda cool too....and my birthday is coming up (hint hint)....


I have always love the Foundry \'style\' of paint, so clean and crisp. Steve Dean has a very similar style.

The thing is, I have a bunch of these painting guides that just sit on a shelf (GW, Darkson, even the CMON annual) do I really need another?

Aaaaaa...what is a guy to do?

Kev definately hasn\'t painted ALL the minis on the Foundry website though he has painted a lot (I know I painted a few hundred for a start...)

But Kev\'s a great painter. His style is quite different to what you get normally here at coolmini but it\'s very well thought out and his colour selection is second to none.

Kevin has a very interesting painting style and it looks good on the table top. It might be a interesting read to improves one skills on painting large armys for wargaming. Id love to have a read but at $52.00 its a bit out of my budget right now.

Though 25 pounds is actually $44.50 USD right now.. I used http://xe.com

so chargeing $52.00 its hardly post free

Quite possibly...

But...

If you printed out 178 pages of info onto good quality paper at high resolution, it would probably cost you more than the book.
You don\'t have to print it out of course, but you can\'t sit up in bed and read your PC, or take your PC to the bathroom, or prop your PC up in front of you whilst you are painting....Well at least most of us can\'t.

There seems to be something both sacred and comforting about a book, especially a high quality one.

Computers do alot of great things, but they still cannot replace that element.

I love his stuff and would like this book.

Where is the button for the 25 GBP copy, though? All I can find is the 37 GBP price.

Am I missing something here? ???

Well, yeah, he is responsible for every single image on the Foundry site. He does all their photography, scanning and image processing.

But there are many painters who have produced the painted figures for Foundry. From 1998 to 2000 when I was painting for them there must have been at least ten painters doing painting for them.

But not to take anything away from Kev. He has painted more of it than anyone (I think). And his work is amongst the best of it. Certainly better than my Foundry work.

The Foundry site begins by asking what country you are in. Experiment, you will find the post free price is:

UK 25 pounds
Europe 37 Euros
USA US$52
Rest of the World 30 pounds.

As you can see the \"Free Post\" costs 5 pounds more to places like Australia. That is a small amount, but (rant on ) I object to being told this is POST FREE. It is dishonest and relies on me not changing location to check prices. If Foundry were to drop POST FREE and admit they charge something for the post (however much) they\'d probably see my money. Until then :flame:.

You\'ll see the same applies to their figures. To get a deal down here add half the price again to the UK price for POST FREE delivery.

Sorry I hate Bryan Ansell and his dishonest practices.

Sorry Steve, I had a look at the book yesterday and I wasn\'t impressed for £25 notes.
Much as I appreciate and admire Kevin\'s painting, the book\'s not for me.
(Different {brush}strokes for Different folks.!)

This book will only be of use to people who have an interest in the \'Foundry Style\' of painting as demonstrated on the figures on their website. It produces a very bright, cartoony look which some people will hate. It makes no pretence to be able to take figures to GD standard, but will be of interest to gamers and others who perhaps have large numbers of figures to paint. I should also add that there is a large element of advertising of Foundry products, particularly their paint system which Kevin Dallimore devised. This is no worse than the product placement found in similar GW productions however.

Sounds like it would be nice to have, but my wife would kill me if I bought a book for $52. Plus I just don\'t have the money to toss around.

It is very unfortunate that they claim post free, when it is not.

Well we\'re not arguing here Steve.
I agree that this book would be a tremendous resourse to a Wargaming Club/Community, and I also agree that the painting style is different to that which we are used to seeing on CMON in the top 50.
I\'m not degrading the book at all, just pointing out that as with the Andrea Fantasy book it will not suite everyone\'s taste or all miniatures.

I think that as has been pointed out here recently we (CMON\'ers) are rather spoilt in that we see so many great and subtle pieces of work that we forget that the origin of our hobby/addiction lies with the wargaming community.
Foundry\'s painting style ( and by definition Kevin Dallimore\'s) is aimed at the production of high quality armies and not the jaw dropping individual masterpieces we see here.
I just wish that GW would consider the level of some of their display armies in stores to have to match standards as painted by Kevin and Steve Dean.
