Hiya gang,

I'm collecting white scars at the moment and want to sculpt some topknots onto the bald headed marines. no I assume the best method to do this is to make a small ball of GS then squish it almost flat on the top of the head, let it set, then repeat till it creates a layered column then sculpt hair when the column is tall enough. On the other hand i'm thinking it might be a better idea to build it around a paper clip length pinned into the top of the head. Any thoughts?

Doing a tall or projecting bit of hair, or whatever, drilling for a short length of paperclip wire is probably the best way to go to, but assuming you wanted to do this just using GS (or any epoxy putty for that matter) it's perfectly doable.

But there's no need to build up a projection like this (a small one) in multiple steps like you describe; I'm all for breaking sculpting into discrete stages but that's overkill. You only need to hold a long bit of putty between two fingertips and moosh the end firmly in place, tweak as needed, let it set and then sculpt the finished form over the top of that.

There is a small risk of a projection like this popping free of a smooth surface, especially during handling. For extra security you'd drill a small hole or carve a small divot to form a keel for the blob of putty, I do this sometimes when adding a nose to a face.
