Grenadier Yeti - feedback please!

OK, another old school mini. Several things I would like input about. First, I am correcting the \"levels\" with GIMP and would like an opinion about whether I am doing it properly.
Second, I want to do a \"snow base\", but I don\'t know if there is a simple household surrogate for \"snow\". Third, the paintjob - any suggestions?

Thanks!

Sorry impossible to tell as you have the mini beside you. If the picture on the screen looks like the one in your hand then Bingo jobs a goodun!
Second, I want to do a \"snow base\", but I don\'t know if there is a simple household surrogate for \"snow\".
Try Baking soda. It\'s not something I\'ve tried but I understand it works reasonably well.
Third, the paintjob - any suggestions?
The paint seems Ok but it looks as if there is a very strong and quick transition between the dark colour and the lighter grey of the highlights.
Perhaps you might want to consider picking out certain areas with white to give the extra sparkle. ie the crease of the elbow on it\'s left arm, the right hand, the left knee and then key points on the shoulders and head.

Thanks!

thanks dragonsreach.

My wife suggested the same thing - \"make him whiter\". Always listen to your better half...

Well that\'s a very great piece of advice.
My wife is my greatest support and critic she always spots the errors and makes very useful suggestion.
In a way I\'m glad she doesn\'t paint, as I know what would happen. First Golden Deamon she\'d enter, she\'d walk away with a trophy. :D

I would go whiter. I would also put him on a bigger base. As for snow have a look in my gallery (link in signature) If you like that I\'ll tell you how to do it.

1. Equal part baking soda, water and white glue.
2. A tiny (pin head or less) of blue paint. Stops the snow going yellow.
3. After its applied and dried I mix equal part water glue and couple drops white paint and do two coat to help seal and strengthen the snow.

Good luck.

yeesh...

Was there ever a time when we would have thought that sculpt was good?

(probably!)

Still, its good to see the old stuff here. Sounds like you got a bunch of great advice already, so I won\'t chime in on that.

I have always been partial to Yetis, Bigfoot (bigfeet?) and Sasquatch minis. I have an extremely ugly Grenadier one as well, but was surprised to see it isn\'t the same one you show here.

@supervike - yes it is true that many of the older minis are \"clunky\", but I still think they can be painted up nicely. Also, since I am fairly new to the hobby, I feel more comfortable practicing my technique on them before tackling the more detailed, newer sculpts. I picked up a Thunderbolt Mountain mini in a recent Ebay lot of miniatures, and the detail on it is too intimidating for my current skill level!

Just in THAT way? But I can think of so many other ways....

Treide...don\'t get me wrong I love the old minis too....and your point about practicing on them is a good one. In fact, I do that myself (and I am not new to the hobby...)

In my description of this mini...

I mentioned about how the older ones are great learner pieces. I think the sculpting was a bit kinder to painters back then.

Anyhow, keep posting and painting, fun stuff.

@vincegamer - not sure how I could manage to make that lump look like a conch. If I were to go for the humor factor, I could make it look like a lump of cheese and call him a \"Wisconsin Yeti\".

@supervike - I like your manticore. I think it is a good example of how nice some of the old sculpts actually are. I wish more people would post them, because I think the same Reaper or GW sculpt done by 100 different painters gets old after awhile.
