Grey Knight Termies

It's been a busy week. Imperial Guard were finished and put on ebay, worked on other projects, and I've also started the next round of minis for sale. Part of that group is the box of Grey Knight Terminators that I picked up and reviewed as one of my audition pieces to become a WAMP Reviewer.

I cleaned up these guys in my hotel room on a business trip last month since I had nothing else to do. Stupid work laptop wouldn't play my Firefly DVDs.

The picture's a little shadowy, but I'm too tired to care at the moment. There will be better ones as the WIP progresses.

I airbrushed Tamiya Gun Metal for the base coat over black primer. I really love this color- it has a tremendous amount of depth and complexity that you don't see in any of the GW metallics. The gold is P3 Blighted Gold. Once they were completely base coated I painted on some Quick Shade. I'm really getting that hang of that stuff- didn't have a single blob or overaccumulation of the stuff this time.

For the heraldric shields I decided to freehand everything. They were hit with Quick Shade as well to keep the pieces matching.

Tomorrow I'll be starting on all of the highlights. I'm going to highlight the steel first and then work my way through all the details.

Well, life happened tonight so I was only able to spend 30 minutes painting, but I did manage to finish the first layer of highlights on the leader of the Termies. I used thinned Cold Steel from P3 and slowly layered it on to maximize the contrast. There'll be two more layers of highlights I suspect- 1:1 Cold Steel to Mithril Silver and final edge highlighting and reflection points with Mithril Silver and maybe a little straight skull white if the contrast isn't high enough. Once that's done I'll revisit the shadows if I need to.

Currently I'm keeping their bladed weapons as straight steel, but should I do power weapons instead to add variety? If so, then should I do a pattern or some sort or just make the steel glow blue?

looks nice so far!!! : but still a long way to go highlighting the armour; you could use some dark non metalic colours (wash)to give it more depth (the armour)

I'd go for metallic blades, keep it realistic throughout. Otherwise it might look like they're walking around with those Bladerunner TL-tube umbrella's. ^^

Well... it's been a while but I've made some progress on these guys. Most of it was done before my son was born, I just finally got around to taking pictures. At this point I feel that the steel is completely done, but i need to shade the gold darker. I also decided that I'm going to do some lightning style power weapons, so I painted all of the blades black. This is a pic of just the squad leader:

Does anyone know if there are codex names for the Grey Knight Terminators? I'm trying to decide what to write on the scrolls on their shoulders.

I've worked hard over the past 2 days to finish the captain of this Grey Knight Terminator squad so I can enter him into a painting comp at my local hobby store this weekend. The power weapon wasn't hard to do- I just had to take the time to be careful and precise. I'm not sure it looks like lightning, but I think it looks pretty good.

I went with an asphalt base design because these Grey Knights are ultimately going to be a part of an overall Space Marine army I'm working on and they're all going to have asphalt bases. I added in some flowers I preserved using Darklord's techinque and used them to add some color and diversity to the scene.

This guy's names Alaric after one of the names that appears in the 40k wikis under the Grey Knight section. I have no idea who he is, but they said he was the leader so I thought it was fitting to use that name for this captain. I decided to paitn some fake text on the seals and I think it turned out pretty well. The areas were too small for me to even think about making some custom water transfers, so I'm really happy the text turned out.

I finally got around to working on these guys again. They've been sitting in my open project area for far too long. All I really had to do was touch up the eyes, the power design on the blades, and a couple other minor things. They're pretty much done except for the bases.

These guys have been staring at me from the "holding" area of my work bench for a very long time. It wasn't until I cleared off the sheldf above my work desk for more storage area of ongoing projects that I decided to finish these guys. I finally got over my procrastination and sculpted the asphalt bases, which was the only thing I had left to do.

Some may remember the Captain, as I posted him in the recent past on CMON. I won 2nd place in the Hobby Town Model Competition with him.

I learned a lot about painting metallics from these guys and they were my first attempt at painting lightning style power weapons- which could use a little more work, but I need to just be done with them.
