The armor on this guy and the rest of his squad had been done for some time but I finished the rest of him (cloth, text, power weapon, details, etc.) in two days to get him ready for the Hobby Town model competition that's happening today (the 16th).
I debated for a long time between doing the weapon as metal with reflection streaks or as a power weapon. I really think the power weapon adds more drama to the piece and that having one more section of metal would have made him blend together. On the other hand I don't think the power weapon was a complete success because it doesn't look like lightning coursing over the blade's surface. I think I need to do more tiny branching lines to sell that effect.
I sculpted the base to make him match the asphalt base theme that I'll be using for the rest of my space marines army. The flowers are from my back yard and I used Darklord's technique to preserve them for modeling (there's a tutorial over at WAMP if you want to check it out).
My camera added a sepia wash over the whole model that I couldn't get rid of. I'm not sure why it did this as I was using a completely white background. I use daylight bulbs for photography and painting... maybe light pollution from my overhead incandescent?
