Greyish bone - How?

Hi there!

I know how to paint bone - but only brownish bone.
I\'d like to know which colors you use for the greyish bone effect (GW colors) and a sample pic would be cool. :)

Have a nice day,
TobiWan

Hi TobiWan....

Welcome to CMON. I am afraid I can\'t really answer your question because I am useless at painting bone, but having had a quick look at your site I suspect that you might be better suited to giving advice rather than asking for itlol

I am sure someone will be along shortly who specialises in bone:flip:

Thank you for the warm welcome. ;)

Are you the same guy who once had a homepage named \'Finnhammer\'?

*looking forward to the bone specialists* :D,
TobiWan

Sorry, I have yet to advance to the status of having a home page, so it wasn\'t me.

The \'specialists\' will be along later. I hope! The forums have been incredibly quiet over the last 48 hours or so. Must be holiday period for a lot of folks.

I used to do grey Bone all the time, since brown bone looked dirty and unatural. Mostly, you just use all of the GW grey color EXCEPT the blue-greys. Those being Space Wolves Grey, Ghostly Grey and Shadow Grey. I never used it on a mini with a lot of bone, just for tiny bits on Orcs like teef and such. I would imgine it would be the same techinique if you put in the grainy texture of bones.

Depending on what you want, you could look into Greenish bones. This technique can be seen on my
Morbid Puppet it definatly gives a sense that the bone has been infected or dirtied.

Ok, I personally prefer cream colored bone, but if you must...

Basecoat: mix from 90/10 Fortress Grey/Chaos Black

Midtone pure fortress gray

Highlights, add skull white gradually to each sucessive layer up to pure skull white.

Easy as pie (the \"pull out of a box\" kind, of course) :D

Jericho

Consummate Brushlicker
If you want greyish bone, then the new GW paints might help a bit. I\'d go from Graveyard Earth up to Desert Brown then mix in white for hilights up to that.

I have none of those new colors (save Catachan Green, which I need for a Nurgle color scheme) but I think it\'d make a good dirty/grey bone color dealie :D

Good Mornin\'!

Thank you for your replys!!! :)

@ Errex: I like brownish bone, but if the rest of the mini is already brown the bone simply doesn\'t stand out.

@ Chrispy: Your greenish bone looks excellent - how did you do it? ???

Have a nice day,
TobiWan

Hey TobiWan...

I faced this issue recently when I painted a 6 skeleton warband. What did is:

paint the entire bone area (amost all of my skeletons!) Codex Grey.

Either dry brush or thin coat on Bleached Bone. Make sure to steer clear of joints or other areas you want to keep dark. The idea here is to let the greyish cast of the Codex come through.

Highlight (very little, or the contrast will be too much and unrealistic) with Skull White.

That\'s basically all, though of course you can work some blending magic on the interface areas between the grey, bone, and white colors.

Sorry I don\'t have any webified pics to share of these minis. PM me if you want me to e-mail pics to you.

Andy
