The issue is a little more complex than that though. It wouldn\'t be if cert 18 games were just that - only played by people old enough. But they aren\'t. There were parents on the radio over here yesterday openly admitting to letting their 8 and 9 year old kids play GTA (mainly just to shut them up as well!). And that is A Very Bad Thing™ if you ask me. Especially when games/graphics are becoming increasingly visceral and realistic.

I\'m certainly not asking for these games to stop being made - I\'m as happy as the next virtual homicidal maniac when I\'m disembowelling things with a butcher\'s hook. We just need to make sure that they\'re only played by the correct audience.

I agree with Scott whole heartedly on this issue of failure of people to respect their role as parents and say NO expecially when it comes to age ratings for Games/Movies.(*) However the problem is that even giving an Audience Rating of 18+ for a game or movie is no guarentee of maturity of the participants.

And yes, I do see that there is a correllation between Video/Computer games and Wargames in that both sets of participants are fantasising violence. So the Irony of that isn\'t lost on me

Oh i definitely agree that people should respect the age certificates a game is given, they are there for a reason. and i also agree that the games now are especially more graphic and violent.

Its just i have seen parents blame games when their children are bad yet they buy them the game without being properly informed.

All i meant by my comment though is a lot of people make statements and comments unnecessarily. But it happens im not denouncing peoples freedom of speech, but some disputes are avoidable in some cases (ie the golden compass film as one, and in a way games another)

People always look to blame somebody.

and we sit here playing with deamons and pretending to shoot dead whole armies

Although not as graphic as a computer game still a similar theme, and i have seen players of say 8-9. It seems we are in a society were such topics are all around us as more younger people are subjected to higher levels of violence and it seem acceptable.

Spacemunkie is right when he says correct audiences for particular products. Just it is a wholly utopian idea, one that wont be achieved unfortunately

I agree with the whole parenting issue etc but having played the game for a few hours and advanced through about 25% of the story I can say as with all Rockstar games there are subtle things that make you think of why these sorts of actions are wrong.

But as for the game it kicks ass I\'m loving it!!!!

Although with the game being called Grand Theft Auto and with a huge 18 label on the front, there really isn\'t much excuse ;)

YES!!! Freaking cool!

Brief description maybe for those of us who have game sites blocked at work...;)

It\'s blocked for me too, but I gandered at it this morning before work.

It was a Superhero game (generic superhero) where the story line is you are the hero, but suffer from amnesia. The storyline obviously, would be to explore the area you are in, trying to discover your identity...but it was all free flowing (ie you can go anywhere in any order).

So, there you go...a brief summary!

Hehe thats what i meant. Parents seem to think \'they want it so lets go the shop they can grab it an il pay\' despite this big 18 certificate and the title (grand theft auto, manhunt) they pay little heed.

When san andreas came out i had pre-ordered it but forgo my id the day i went to buy it so was refused sale, but as i was paying a mum with 2 young boys had bought a copy and asked them do they want the guide. I said to the cashier how can you serve them knowing full well that it isn\'t for the lady at all. Yet you refuse to serve me when i pre-ordered it. He couldn\'t say anything.

How about a free flowing Batman game, with access to all of Gotham. You\'d have main overall story lines, and plenty of subplots to keep it going. MAKE THAT GAME SOMEONE!!

Vikey,
For fear of sounding about seven years old, have you seen they\'re doing Batman Lego this year, where you can be Batman and a host of associated characters roaming round Gotham. If it\'s half as good as Star Wars lego then I\'m sold.

GTA4, well maybe I\'m getting old but any game that encourages and condones beating up pregnant women, I\'ll be giving a wide berth to...

Player character is a biogenetic experiment gone wrong & escaped.

Special powers include ability to jump entire buildings, absorb enemies and ability to shapeshift into enemy form (amongst others I imagine...).

28 Days Later style virus is infecting the populace, and the army are fighting huge running battles with these infected.

Looks as though you can free-roam and tackle the game in a multitude of different ways - guns-blazing, stealth, infiltration, setting enemy onto enemy. Also appears that all vehicles will be useable as well as being able to command military vehicles and forces if you assume the form of an officer.

All in a GTA-like open world which the designers reckon boast the most NPCs in any game of this type - more than Dead Rising even. From some of the screens I\'ve seen, the streets are literally jammed with action...

Sounds class. Let\'s hope they do it justice.

Please don\'t spout this nonsense.
While the game may give you the opportunity (borderline encouragement) to kill the representation of a pregnant woman, it does not condone it in any way.

Condone: to regard or treat (something bad or blameworthy) as acceptable, forgivable, or harmless

Acceptability: No one in the game will judge you, but other pedestrians will scream, beat you up when they see you, and police will arrest you or attempt to kill you.
Forgivable: Cannot really be measured in the game environment.
Harmless: Police will chase you, you gain nothing (maybe money from the corpse).

I haven\'t killed any pedestrians in this game, just as I don\'t kill people in real life. When I shot a criminal I actually felt bad and a bit sick it\'s so realistic. It is as always down to the player, and no more condones or encourages violence than a book or film with violent scenes.

Whatever old pal. You stick to your opinions and I\'ll stick to mine. it\'s obvious you\'re in the \'for\' camp and I\'m in the \'against\'.
You can bandy rhetoric around and spout dictionary definitions at me but as an editor by profession I\'m always careful to choose my words and their context correctly.

I feel including the option to beat up pregnant women distasteful at the very least - doubtless you\'ll tell me it\'s just a metaphor for life.

The book and film argument is somewhat specious. You\'re passive in these instances and not an active participant making the choices...

Logan, you make very good points.

Whilst I think GTA is a real masterpiece of gaming design and it\'s great fun to play, I\'m increasingly coming round to your point of view. The realism of these things has to alter the way we view them ultimately.

Even in something cartoony like Saints Row, the violence is very real - the way the unconscious bodies and corpses move when you kick them is certainly eye opening.

The original GTA caused a furore, and it was only a top-down cartoon really. Things have progressed at an awesome pace, and I don\'t think there\'s enough research being done into the effects of violent imagery - TV, movies, games, porn etc on kids.

Schools in the UK are becoming increasingly violent places with weapons often involved. As a (sometime) teacher I\'d like to know what is causing this! As a rule, kids are better off than they were in my father\'s or grandfather\'s day. They live in better conditions, have more things to do and play with and certainly have easy access to stuff that previous generations didn\'t.

Nothing to do with scare-mongering or being pro/anti. I\'d just like a few questions answered and to see society take a little more responsibility for it\'s actions.

Comments like the one about giving pregnant women a kicking do the game no favours at all if you ask me!

It is an interesting exercise, nothing more.

I get to pretend to be a bad guy...more often than not, in these types of games, i end up \"doing the right thing\" anyhow, but I can pretend all I want.

But, and the real crux of the problem is that I KNOW its just pretend. Maybe its a sick fantasy, or exploring a dark vision. But when I put that controller down, my life returns to normal... There are some screwed up individuals who don\'t return to normal, who cannot seperate real from fantasy.

There are no easy answers to the question, I can understand parts of both arguments. But, I\'ll probably buy the game as well, so I guess I\'m feeding into that same mentality.

I think there are questions that need to be asked about how much we want to desensitise our kids to violence and x-rated material.

There will also come a point where graphics (and control methods - see the Wii...) in these games mirror the real world. Do we really want to (possibly?) be producing photo-realistic games where you can be a serial killer and use stabbing motions of a motion controller to take people out?

Bear in mind that a game like that has already been made. When does a game stop being a game and become a simulation?

I\'ve been playing videogames for as long as I can remember. I\'ve been playing violent ones since I was 11 years old.

Ammount of people I have murdered: 0

I have no desire to go out and beat a prostitute to death with a baseball bat after playing Grand Theft Auto any more than I desire to grab a load of ICBMs and lob them at the Soviet Union after playing DEFCON.

OR a training exercise.

Never. Unless they find a way to give AI all the cognitive and physical abilities of a human there will always be things a real human can do that a videogame character cant. That small but important curveball makes it impossible to use a videogame as an effective training program as there will always be factors the developers cant simulate or situations that they could never possibly think of. There aint no wallhacking or aimbots in RL.

Who said anything about an entire programme? It\'s certainly viable to use computer simulations in training - it happens all the time already!

I\'d say that it would be eminently possible for the military to develop devices for physical interaction with the virtual environment or scenario. The AI thing continues to improve all the time, but computer simulations don\'t have to test every response or simulate every condition anyway. They can be extremely specific in terms of learning design and outcome.

So whilst computers may never be able to completely replicate real life, they can certainly be used for conditioning one\'s brain to think and react in certain ways.

My quick google-fu failed, but I recall reading on someone\'s blog about the rapid improvement in marksmanship scores in the US military, which the military researchers were attributing directly to the rise of first-person-shooter video games.

All I know is I did get both the PS3 and the Wii. I just have to wait until her tennis to be finished before I can go running over people.

Whic brings me to another point:

WHAT ARE NINTENDO DOING???!

18 months into the life of Wii now, and they\'re STILL marketing it on the back of Wii Sports! Get some decent software out for the f***in\' thing!!!!

But it does show how good Wii Sports is!

I bought GTA 4 on the morning it came out (PS3 versions in very short supply where I was) but haven\'t had a chance to play it as only got home late last night

I\'m looking forward to seeing what all the hype is about as I haven\'t played a GTA game before. I also bought condemned 2, as I like my horror games
