Back Again

With all the craziness going on in the world I have had some more free time and finally made it back to my paints. It has been a long while since I last posted any updates, I have had a hard time staying motivated after I moved and had to give up my painting desk because of space constraints. Here is the complete oni I started all those months ago.

I probably could have worked on some areas a bit more, but I was happy with the outcome and wanted to keep on moving to the next model while I continued to feel in spired.

I was here and read your post, indeed it's hard to get motivated some times but posting here and have ppl respond to our thread can gives you wings! I just came back as well to the forum after a while because i missed it!

I like the way you painted your metals, gives a nice overall look.

That is always the hope. CMON has been a great place for motivation in the past and well as a place to really improve one's skills. Also welcome back and thank you for the compliment. I knew going into this model, that I would get a lot of practice with metals. I ended up deciding to go TMM because I wanted to get more practice with this technique before going back and trying more NMM.

Oni of Souls

I started working on the next Rising Sun model, "Oni of Souls". I have done the blue one, the red one, the metal one, and now on to a lot of ppl's favorite color the green one.

Most of my experience painting green is usually more towards the darker greens, like with orcs or goblins. Trying for more of yellow green will be new. I haven't made much progress yet. Basically choose a spot and started experimenting so I could get a feel for my color recipe.

Group of Oni

Just wanted to add a group shot of the completed oni to get a feel of what they look like together.

I will hopefully post some photos of my progress on the oni of souls later today.

Gloomhaven Organizer

I didn't get any work done on the oni as I was distracted by a side project that arrived in the mail, which took me the last few days to build and organize. It's not a miniature but it does relate to a game with miniatures. I bought a wooden game box organizer for my Gloomhaven game and expansion.

It allows me to store the main game and forgotten circles expansion all in one box, as well as makes game setup and play much easier. :)

That wooden terrain is begging for some structural add-ons and paint :)

Lol your not wrong, but that would be a very big project, plus I don't really sculpt or do much basing. I am always impressed by the work of others, but just never found it that fun for myself.

Here are some updated photos of the oni of souls:

I need to fix up the left leg a bit more as I feel I kept to much of the dark green and I want to get a better transition of shades, but other than that I believe I am finished with the skin for now. I want to add some other colors to the model which will help me see where I need to continue doing touch ups to the skin.
Also I am looking for any links to tutorials or advice on doing human flesh tones, specifically for the gutted bodies. Since they have been cleaned and drained of blood I need a none rotting corpse skin, probably similar to a butchered pig.

Good to see you still painting Guawol! :) I like these sculpts a lot (I keep telling myself I'm going to paint some Bushido one of these days, maybe I'll finally do it one day soon) and this Oni is no exception. I agree with Toad that the green skintone looks great and perfect for a beastie like this!

Shame on you for reminding me I have all this beautiful miniatures on my shelves, looking at me with a sad look, desperate to be painted...

On a more serious note: great start on the oni.

@Kuribo - It's nice to be painting again. I definitely should have restarted sooner, with all the extra time I have had.

Thank you for the kind words everyone! While the yellow-green skin isn't exactly like the color on the monster's card I am still happy with how it's turning out. Especially after I added some more color to the model. It helped make the skin be even more eye catching while at the same time makes it less harsh.

I got started working on the bone scythe (not sure of the name for that weapon), which I am pretty happy with. I plan on going back and adding a few more extreme highlights to it. I also started base coating the fur vest the belt and the bracers, which I hope to make progress on tonight.

Love the tones on the skin, and the shading of that scythe.

I think the only thing that bothers me a bit is how the scythe hangs from his open hand. Do you plan on rebasing him at all, so that the scythe rests on the ground?

I see what you mean about the scythe hanging there, but this model is part of the "Rising Sun" board game. A colored plate cover slots over the base to show who owns the model during game, so it doesn't really work with rebasing. That is also why I haven't done any basing with the previous models, plus I don't want to get all the basing material in my game box and all over the board as I play the game.

I was able to get some good painting time in over the last couple days. Do a little painting, watch a show, come back paint a bit more. I was able to finish the spear's shaft, bracers, belt, and the oni's fur vest. I did a couple of washes of diluted red ink over the vest to try and give it a red tone so it would contrast a bit with the skin, hopefully making them both pop just a bit more. I also decided to make the shaft of the spear bone just like the scythe, I feel it helps spread the bone color across the model a bit more.

I am definitely enjoying the process and I am starting to get that feeling of excitement, knowing I will get another model finished.

This looks awesome! love the color on the fur.
Thank you Gorb! I was quite happy with the fur vest as well.

Here is another update. Got work done on the trousers and the hair. I am both happy and unhappy with the hair. The back of the hair looks pretty good, but when looking at the model from the front I am having trouble making the locks of hair falling over his shoulders stand out how I want. I am thinking of going back and trying to increase the dark shade in the crevices between the hair strands. Hopefully that will help.
