Is it just me, or does GW produce some of the ugliest futuristic cannon fodder. they seem to have a history of producing some butt ugly models of what should be the easiest things to make... why should the only really good models be available from forge world?? ok so they did good with the plastic cadians, but those vostroyans, praetorians, mordians..urgh.
when i play IG I know my troops are simply meat shields but meat shields with silly hats is too much. at least give them some dignity. I understand their zeal to sell as many models as possible but at least give us some decent choices without raping history and without selling our souls to buy figs from forge world. rant over
favorite infantry- PIG IRON; original plastic guardsmen(with helmets); new forge world death guard?; steel legion; cadian plastics;starship troopers light infantry box
not bad--valhallan; tallarn; catchan metal;
original lead guardsmen
ugly- vostroyan; catachan plastics; praetorian .
in the grim darkness of the far future we eschew protective helmets for silly hats

Never question GW\'s use of silly hats. It\'s a fine tradition that has been upheld since the time of the Chaos Dwarfs!

To be honest though you just seem to have an issue with three Guard ranges with hats and:

The Praetorians - were never intended to be a main range, these were created as a blatant rip off of old British soldier uniforms for a Games Day display called the Battle at Big Toof River (Which was supposed to have a similar vibe to the film Zulu).

The Vostroyans - Marmite miniatures. You seem to love them or hate them. I love them, silly hats and all. Very 40k in style and quite possibly my favourite Guard models.

The Mordians - OK, not my cup of tea, but the silly outfits fit the fluff so I\'ll let them off. Hasn\'t been considered main range for the Guard by GW for a long time so I think they have realised the error of their ways here!

The fact that the FW stuff is, in your eyes, the only really good Imperial Guard stuff does suggest to me that you would perhaps be more interested in historical wargaming miniatures than 40k though, because when I see the Forgeworld stuff that is the vibe I get.

yeah i have a real historical bent... iguess i like realistic fantasy/fiction
my faves are my old metal catachans painted in urban german ww2 scheme
btw have you seen the Pig Iron range-nice and plain--alittle too pricey ,though

actually love the vostroyans from the neck down excellent gas masks etc.

Love the Guard

I\'m going to have to disagree with some of your points. I love the Vostyrans, very 40K and just plain crazy looking. Yes they do remind me of the Wizard of OZ soldiers, but I always thought they were cool.

I also love the Mordians, I have 2500 points of them myself. Trust me, nothing looks cooler then 100+ IG in a Napoleonic paint scheme marching toward their drably painted foe. (camo is for wussies)

I do hate the plastic catachans, only good for zombie conversions if you ask me.

What a lot of people (especially the newer players) don’t seem to understand is that the world of 40K is entirely based on real world history. The codices and information now days suck major. The best stuff was from the Rogue Trader era. GW actually took the time to explain why stuff worked the way it did. The reason that all of the stuff looks like things from the real world is because they are supposed to be things that are left over technology. That’s why Land raiders look like Mark V tanks from WWI and so on.

In the Rogue Trader era, all of the Imperial Guard looked alike. The background material tells of how the Imperial Guard are recruited from a variety of worlds. But they all wore the same uniform. Then they switched to the more diverse troops in the 90s.

Are hats really something worth bitching about? I am starting to think that GW will never do enough good things. People will always find something to bitch about.
