GW Matte Varnish

I usually use Testors Dull Cote, but the place I went to pick some more up was out, so I picked up the Games Workshop Matte Varnish. This is my first time using this stuff and it really dulled out the colors on my mini and left a visible finish.

I\'m wondering if I just didn\'t shake the can enough or if this is standard with the GW Matte Varnish? With the Testors Dull Cote it went on very clear and there was no evidence of a thick finish. Thanks in advance.

I\'ve had that \"thick\" finish from GW Matte as well as Gloss, back when I used it.
Now I too use Testor\'s which I see as far superior. However I know ppl that swear by the GW Matte (not about Gloss though) ;)

GW haven\'t made a Matte varnish for over a year now. Could be that this was just an old can that had been sitting in the shop for a while. They now only do gloss and satin spray varnishes

I had no adea. It must have been discontinued shortly after the printing of the 2005-2006 catalog, because it\'s in there. Online retailer scifigenre still has it in stock.

I\'ve had color muting with GW matte varnish spray. What I thought were nicely visible highlights became quite subtle after the varnish spray.

gw\'s purity seal is not a matte varnish.

forget what some staff will try and tell you.

it\'s a satin varnish, and it\'s crap.

if the mini is going to see a lot of gaming or your a clumsy git like me,
then get some clear gloss wood varnish from a diy store.
it\'s should be the same size of can and will be a little cheaper.

then when it is dry, spray on your dull cote.
it may take two quick coats of dull cote to get rid of the gloss shine.

I\'m not impressed with GW matte spray. There\'s still a visible shine on the two bases I have sprayed it on. Luckily I haven\'t done the figures yet. Not very matte is it GW eh??

never ever use that stuff. It\'s NOT matte and is often defective.

I had to repaint big parts of two tanks because that varnish sprayed dust-like white particles all over sections of my tanks.

Same thing happened to 2 friends of mine too.

Bad bad bad purity seal.

It kills the colors... PERIOD. I used the typical art store brand of matte for years then finally decided to give GW matte a run... it is Matte... i will give it that. It does however kill all the brilliance of any colors and takes them down several notches on the spectrum. The stuff is garbage.

In the U.S. they sell something called \"Matte Varnish.\" I\'ve seen pictures of \"Purity Seal\" in the \"How to Paint Citadel Miniatures\" book, and just assumed it was another varnish.

Is Purity Seal specifically European? Does anyone know if it\'s the same produce as the U.S.\'s Matte Varnish? I\'m suspecting so from these posts.

@thecadian - i would recomment getting testors even if oyu don\'t want to order. the stuff rocks. but if you really don\'t want to use the post, w+n brush on matte is superb but make sure it is well shaken first!
