GW national painting comp.?

I think is is seperate to the Demons in September. WD is very vague about it so I think it is a case of wait and see how it pans out.

They did it a couple of years back when I was a manager.. Basically there were category winners and select models rom each stor that were selected by The staff and customers.. (we did an open voting system then staff knocked heads to decide final winners) .. These are then done in a regional heat and finally a national final...
As I say that was a couple of years ago so it ay have changed now (hopefully)

They started the Demons this way years ago but the staff really didn\'t take very good care of peoples models and the lose and damage really was not worth the time and effort of entering.
The Aussie Demons changed to shop/postal demons the other year and IMHO I think it kills the whole thing but then GW are doing that anyway with their voting system and they don\'t really listen to their customers so I guess they are going to go with it anyway.
I think I will wait until next month when the local managers might know a bit more about it and there is a bit more in the next WD but I really will think twice before I consider a figure that I spent in excess of 30 hours on be trusted to somebody in a local store to be posted or handled.

I hope its not a prelude to things of old..as its been discussed before doing a enter your demons before hand at a local GW store to get into GD would virtually eliminate all competitors from outside the UK for a UK demons which would make it a horrible show.

Not sure if this is part of what your talking about or not but the local GW store is having a painting competition next month and the store manager will be bringing the winning models from each category to the GD to be entered. I plan on entering at the store level where I have a chance at least. I haven\'t entered a GD contest since Games Day 2 (1991ish) where I got an honorable mention thingie.

I believe it\'s being run as a seperate thing jus using Games day as a staging post for the final.....seems a bit strange wil check in with the local store tomorrow...
Doesn\'t your store run a coach trip? Our local stores have for years and never really been more than £15. Ok you have to get up early......not exactly a problem for me.... and tolerate a bunch of over exited kids, but it adds to the whole day.
And lets face it Gamesday is in September so you have the best part of 6 months to save up the £45 (including ticket).
As for the competition after the discussions and complaints that we heard in these forums about the Australian competitions, if GW are intending to go this way for the Golden Deamons then I\'ll be really unimpressed.

I know the GW Portsmouth Store runs a coach each year so I would imagine that the GW Southampton store will as well.

it is a completely sperate competition and will be broken down by age youngbloods and old farts, and have multiple proper categories. Ill put more details up when i read retail news again.

This is completley seperate from the Golden daemons. If my memory serves me correctly, then there are two age groups- Youngbloods for 15 and under and not the youngbloods for people over 16, with 4 categories in each.
Category 1- Single miniature.
Category 2- Squad
Category 3- Vehicle
Category 4- Duel or diorama, on a base no larger than a CD.
I believe the competition starts on the 25th-ish of May, until the 28th June, when the judging takes place.

Are you implying us brits are horrible painters, DFD? Or that the aussie goldem demons are in any way a sham, as they have this system?

Oh god no and Im sorry it came off like that. You Brits are wonderful painters and some of the best...I more meant it will be a small show with few entries..take away all the international competition and it will be a small show.
Yes you will see a lot of fantastic entries, just not what you would with the international flavor.. It ups the competition.

Actualy I think it would be a nice thing to see a UK GD limmited to UK residents and then a \'Best International\' Category and the same goes for all other countries. On top of that I would like to see all Winning minis go head to head with their counterparts from around the world and have a \'Best of year\' Category.
I would also like to see fewer converted minis winning as this is supposed to be a painting competition. Now it seems that not only do you have to be exceptional at painting you also have to be exceptional at Sculpting\\Converting.
Another Category I would like to see is a \'Equal Ground\' Category where everyone paints the same mini to their best abillity with no conversions allowed.

What you generally want is more international competitors so that the status of the competition is increased. There are so many smaller competitions you can enter if you want an easier competition to win.
My guess is that this new competition is an attemt to conquer your complaint.
The reason converted minis win is more related to the fact that almost none of the best painters can keep their filthy little pawns from converting them. Last years Slayer Sword winner was unconverted though, so it is perfectly possible. But you have to realise it has never been and never will be a painting competition as in \"best technique wins\". What it is? Well... that topic has been dealt with over and over. But see it more as a design contest fitted within the frames of the fluff and the winners will make more sense.
I do second the \"unconverted\" paintmaster request though. There would be cool with one category where everybody does the same mini, like they have in spain. On the other hand one could travel to the spanish GD instead!
