GW national painting comp.?

I think what Veggiemanuk was getting at is that it could be kind of annoying to have professional painters, ie. those that do nothing but paint for a living, basically making the rounds of each country and taking all the prizes.

It would kinda make sense to have an international category but this opens up new problems like if a country doesn\'t have a GD. or larger countries.

Anyway it is a bit disheartening for new painters to see the same bunch winning over and over as it\'s not something like athletics where age is a factor.

BS.. Im soon to be 43 and my eyes are no where near what they were when I was 30 or younger.. So I dont really feel I can compete with the younger crowd..still doesnt mean I don\'t try nore would I NOT want them from competing..

This whole its so unfair that the good painters win all the awards crap that pops up every year around Golden Demons time is a bunch of bull.. you want to win.. want to paint better..practice.. work hard at it and you will.. other wise you wont win and reducing the level of the competition because the lazy want to win something is nuts. I know many of these guys that win on a regular basis..They paint every day and many dont do it for a job or for a living, they do it because they love the hobby and are devoted to it. They just allocate their time to it instead of doing other things like playing games or on the PC or video games or hang out in the bars or what ever..they work hard at something they love.. And they win!

@baz: There are a lot of myths going on and this is one of them. I know people that paint professionally for a living that only paint to a table-top level, and I know people who maybe occationally take a commission that are multi-golden demon and slayer-sword winners. The reason people pick up throphies are because of talent and hard work.

I can name you several painters that won last year UK that does not paint professionally and I could point you towards people who won through hard work more then being the most talented painters around.

All in all I see no reason to whine about this, we can\'t all win that\'s why it\'s a competition. But if you are dedicated, have a bit of talent, and are prepared to make a huge effort there is a chance that you will make it at the Uk deamons, have no doubt about that.

However the problem with the UK\'s Golden Demon IMO is all the beautiful miniatures that don\'t place and get no attention afterwards (if not posted here or on boards of course). I would love to have more pictures like the special Ravage they do after the \"Ravage Mix Open\" contest.

This I totally agree on and I really feel GW is missing out on a money maker here. I would definately buy a post GD high quality book or thick Magazine of all the entries. Not just some cheap pamphlet but quality printing. Im sure were not the only ones with this opinion.

Absolutley singing from the same song sheet here Jeff and Sven.
The 2003 Book GW produced was one of the best things GW had done to promote the Painting modelling side of the hobby. It was on a par with both the Ravage books and of course our own Coolminiornot book.

I would refer buying this than paying £8 for a bitz catelogue. the free mini books that come with WD are good, but why not have a book with all the finalists in and entire pages devoted to the winners?

it would be a great source of inspirarion and ideas for hobbyists young (like me) and old(like my dad)

and since jervis puts his work adress in the wd, i now have a way of contacting a GW book... designer... guy.

this is a great idea and it should go forward.

Well we have to attatch a paper about taking photographs of painted miniatures as well and why their method does not work for quality printing at the moment.

OK, i\'d just like to make something clear. My comment was never intended to sound as if I wanted to lessen competition. I\'d just like to see UK residents winning UK GD\'s, French residents winning French GD\'s and so on.

And as I said, i\'d like to see a Best International category so that tallented individuals can enter multiple GD\'s if they so wish (Not everyone can afford to travel around the world just to enter into a painting competition), this would also cater for people who dont have a GD in their country (although a seperate category would be nice for none GD countries).

The other point I made was to have a Best of Year category where all winners from their respective categories go head to head and the best from around the world is picked out, if anything this would increase competition.

Slayer Sword winners going head to head to win a \'Righteous Bolter\' could be the most prestigious award of the year ;)

I saw a Master painting category mentioned earlier in this thread. Basically where you can only paint a certain mini and no conversions.
This is certainly something I would like to see in the Uk GD.

I spoke to Alan Merrett about it ( GD Chief Judge ) and he told me it was basically down to not having enough time for anymore categories.

It\'s a shame but with all the complaints about the judging I suppose one more category would only make it worse.

Well I happen to agree that there should be a \"straight\" mini painting only category.

As for the issue of insufficient time for judging, get more judges. Preferably ones who are Painters rather than Sales/Business orientated.

It would be very easy for them to create a one mini only category after all they release one every year for the GD in the first place.

So they could just do the same as they do for Salute...paint the previous years special mini be it fantasy or 40k :D

I noticed last year that the judging was sporadic to say the least, a person would look at a few mini\'s on a shelf of one category make a decission and then move on to another category and may or may not come back to look at other entries in the same cabinet almost as if they had a quota to fill and once they met that quota that was it.

A lot of good entries were not looked at but then that is the old arguement again isn\'t it......

Yeah but they\'d have to improve the damn mini\'s.

Having said that, this years is looking a little better now I\'ve seen a proper painted version. Here

For some reason I voted on this and completely didn\'t make the connection between it being an excellent paint job and the latest GD mini...I saw a geen of the mini which I think was unfinished because for some reason I thought it was a Fantasy figure this year???

Obviously my brain is slowing down and I need to go back to work again...

That was a Sword winner? I wasn\'t that impressed by it, don\'t get me wrong, I gave it a 9 (I reserve 10s for minis that make me go \'Wow!\') for technical expertise but I think it was a touch lacking in artistic expression and appeal.

I never quite understood why the GD isn\'t done on a public voting system, there is the argument that it raises the quality of judging when it is done by a panel, but the very same panel is only human, and when you have to look at hundreds of mini\'s you might start to miss things. Don\'t get me wrong, i\'m not bad-mouthing the judges, but if you spend 300 hours on a model, you don\'t want to lose out on a possible prize because of an unfortunate oversight. (phew..... rant over!)

It would be difficult to allow a public voting process as the time scale for GD isnt huge plus not all people who attend are there fore the painting element.

Could you imagine trying to short out around 10,000 votes in 6 hours. Although the judges may not always be right i think its the most manageable and workable system.

Cleezy beat me to it but its all about time.. recording the votes in the 6 hours or so time they have would be not possible.
