GW open Boxing Day!!!

What isn't open Boxing Day? They've run a deal where spending £100 gets you a £10 voucher that has to be spent between Christmas & New Year, one extra day open means more kids actually get to spend them (& any money they got). Plus the chance to escape from the hungover relatives & go play a game with a load of freshly glued new troopers 
and presumably hungover GW staff Your "Is nothing sacred..." does chime with me on various levels though, I'm not convinced 24/7 retail/commerce is healthy for a local society just because it benefits a global economy. Cheers, B.

i stopped by my local store yesterday and they were wrapping stuff up. everywhere is open. balls to that. i'd rather stay in and then go out for a nice walk in the avo

Good for you Mick! Not patronizing stores on holidays and Sundays has become a tradition in my family. At some point, don't remember when, we realized that the stores made their people work those days because there was money to be made, so we decided to not encourage business practices we wouldn't want to work under ourselves.
We do it for religious reasons - the whole "Keep the Sabbath Holy" thing - but we found that there are some very practical reasons for a day of rest that our non-religious friends find very appealing too. I think the biggest and most obvious is that having even one regular day off makes it possible to fulfill your duties on the other six days without going bonkers.

Of course nothing is sacred any more, but there have always been people who work through what everyone else would consider holidays, Fire, police, ambulance, nurses, pilots, armed forces, TV people, hotel staff Etc etc (we had our bin emptied Christmas day 2 years ago!) and remember that not everyone is in a nice stable nuclear family, there may be some people who will look forward to seeing their "mates" at GW the local 7/11 etc as they are so lonely - so if you are working - I am having only my 2nd Christmas off in 8 years - try and enjoy it - you should at least be able to make it a bit of fun! - remember, suicide rates peak at christmas.......

very true, but bear in mind, some need the extra cash. working 9-5 all week is one thing but being able to top it up can be very handy. trust me. i started work at 0830 this morning and won't be going home till 1700 tomorrow. that will pay for my new sofa!

@freakinacage - Quite right, occasional overtime is nice and sometimes necessary. Our family's decision was meant to address constant overworking of a store's employees simply to make a profit, not to keep people from earning money they need.
@Tercha - You speak a lot of truth; please don't think I live in a dream world. Our decision is because of those realities you mentioned, not despite them.
My first two jobs were in Law Enforcement, and I know the necessity of such work. For all the necessity of a cop's work, the hours are very hard on a family and on one's emotional health. Their sacrifices should encourage us to avoid working schedules like that without great need, not to accept such things as normal.
As for being lonely, I've been there myself, and I see it at my local game store a bit. My wife and I think a better solution to meeting in a store, though, is to invite those people to our home and give them a place of rest and enjoyment - another reason to guard our days off, we wouldn't be able to do this if we were running around seven days a week, 365 days a year.

I used to work for GW, you dont get overtime trust me. As for boxing day, over the xmas period im usually that drunk I cant find my ass til after new year let alone a shop lol

Gee, why would you get upset about this? So what if so many boxing matches are going on, I'm sure there aren't that many fans of the sport so it only makes sense that the stores would be open. I mean, really, how important is it to see two grown men pummel each other?

according to my sources its because they want to get even more money from a shrinking fanbase before everyone realises they have been taking the piss out of modellers/gamers for the last 10 years (but the REAL question is: will they pay the staff overtime? my apologies for posting stupid questions, of course they wont)
Actually, a little birdie sat on my shoulder tells me that a few remaining copies of Space Hulk have been shipped in from the US (what?? They didnt sell???) and will be available in 'certain' stores on the 26th dec.
These are only rumours of course and im not prepared to answer any questions regarding what i just said without consulting my lawyer first :silly!:

GW are opening on Boxing Day in order that spoilt little Trisan's can take back the present that mummy, daddy or great aunt Hildegarde got wrong and swap it for the latest Uber-Mega-Killy Army of Death that White Dwarf are pimping.
To be honest unless you have a strong christian belief the Christmas period is a nightmare, and a waste of time.
Okay I get a couple of days Public Holiday, but so what. Most of christmas day will be filled with answering the phone to relatives who don't bother to call any other day of the year.
Boxing Day 90% chance I'll be sat Painting all day.
