Is GW Purity Seal (Satin Varnsih) any good? And how would you recommend using it?

I use it all the time as a standard issue fixatif for my models. Its easy to use, protect miniature perfectly well and isn\'t shiny. Very good if you need a matt varnish for protection.

Does what it says on the tin, ie it\'s a \'satin\' finish, ie still has a sheen to it.

Guess it depends on what you want a satin varnish for. I Never found much use for it to be honest. It\'s too much of a \'halfway house\' in that it doesn\'t give the protection of a gloss or the true flat finish of a matt.

Think you\'re better off finding a true matt varnish. Testors Dullcote is the best I\'ve found and it\'s now readily available again.

Havent used much, if any, GW paints and such. My only problem with what I have seen with many such things is that what you have is some fairly normal stuff, with a recognised name on it and thus they will really jack the price up.

I\'ve had good luck with Rust-Oleum. Good quality, moderate price, no fancy name attached.

Pshhh, I have trouble with it and staff at my local store told me that it may ruin some models (it ruined a whole army in store). It is temperamental to say the least, you have to watch temperature\'s, distances your spraying at and shake it for ages (maybe even leave it in warm water a while).

I would buy vallejo\'s satin varnish its a lot less likely to mess up your mini and is the same price/cheaper depending where you get it. It is widely available online.

You not only have to do all that. Some batches are so bad that nothing will help. Their quality control is very poor in that area. I wouldn\'t touch the stuff with a 10\' pole.

@Yrko, you have it backwards. Gloss protects. Much harder than matt. Gloss is generally purer varnish or laquer. To dull it down, you have to add flattening agents which soften the varnish.

I just tried it out on one of my older models, it had some glossy effects due to the old red GW ink, which was very glossy! As far as I could see no harm was done to the paint at all! But it removed the glossy effect. So if you don\'t want glossy models it is good enough if you ask me, you just need to be careful using it. Spray with some distance to the model and in a place with dry air.
