GW supermodels

Has it ever occured to any you that there\'s a number of GW models who always get a trophy at Demons?

Slaanesh Champion, Eldar from the Inquisitor range, for example. But the top supermodel, I think, is the Archaon Horse: variations of conversions employing this steed are simply beyond count. And it seems like they always get a trophy!

Also, I\'ve noticed there are some conversions, which became a classic: a Saint Celestine with wings, for example.

What do you think about it? Why do some miniatures become an instant hit that seems to bathe in fame for years?

They\'re all good scuplts and are a cool subject for conversion. The Archaon horse just seems to be the meatiest horse around at the moment.

Someone could clean up if they sculpted a range of decent horses.....

I think it has to do with the fact that you\'re restricted to GW parts if you don\'t want to do your own sculpting. Since most people can\'t compete with the great sculptors like Allan C, Steve Buddle etc., the truly great GW sculpts will be heavily used. The steed of Archaeon is one such example. GW has no other horse that can match it.

Also, certain minis, like Celestine, are great sculpts, but I think some people have an issue with the cherubs and chose to replace the robe and the cherubs with something and wings would be the first thing that comes to mind. For the Demons you will have to convert a mini in order to stand a chance. Putting wings on Celestine is a fairly easy way to achieve a powerful result.

Just a few thoughts... :)

*edit* Hey, I just been away for two days and Scott\'s become a freak AND has a new avatar! What happened to the monkey?

Yes, I completely agree about GW\'s horses. When you need a plain and yet handsome horse for a conversion (by \"plain\" I mean no armour and such), Archaon\'s steed seems to be the #1 choice. In fact, I was very tempted myself to use it for one project, but the idea of \"oh no, not another Archaon horse!\" attitude stopped me.

As for Celestine, I think the reason why the conversion with the wings is so popular is because there\'s a piece of concept art in the Codex, where Celestine rises above the battlefield, spreading her wings.

Now my question is, is it OK to follow this kind of trends (which seem to work every time), or has it already become a matter of poor taste to do so after all these yeard?

I think it\'s OK as long as you bring something new to the model, like franciuus\' did on the wings of his emperor\'s champion (another well used mini)

Cool wings

And let\'s face it, wings are always cool ;)

Personally I don\'t think I would go with either one of those three (archaon\'s horse/celestine/emperor\'s champion) just becasue I would want to be as original as possible, but still, everything has probably already been done, it\'s juts a matter of doing it even better

Oh yes, I\'ve seen this mini, it\'s absolutely amazing.

As for being original, yes, that\'s precisely what I have in mind: how come people still do those things, knowing that they\'ve already been done by other painters and even got a trophy!

Because they still get a trophy ;)

The number of bretonnian \'archaons\' that have got trophies is quite large too

Yes, that\'s true. As for the trophies, my husband jokingly advised me to make a conversion for the next Demons: an Eldar from the Inquisitor range leading an Archaon horse mounted by a Slaanesh Champion with wings. lollollol

I think I might do a celestine with wings this year, I want one for my army anyway, and I think my other entries are less popular subjects.

Clearly what you want is a winged Celestine with attendant winged cherubs, battling a winged slaanesh champion, mounted on a winged Archaons steed, now thats what I call original!

lol

lol

I like that! lollollol Say, should I submit it for the Open competition or as a diorama? Because if it\'s gonna be a diorama, I\'m going to make sure there\'s not a single mm on the ground not covered by winded skulls ... lol

It\'s more an issue of certain models being popular rather than certain models improving the chance of one\'s winning.

Maybe you could convert Celestine into a Nurgle champion with fly wings?:]

Initially, it was meant as a joke, but as the post was being submitted I began to actually like the idea! :) It has to be well done, of course!

It might be tough to pull off but would be a fairly unique piece combining a couple very common themes...

It would actually be a really interesting army idea as well. Base a nurgle chaos army off sisters models rather than SM\'s. Again would have to be done well to pull it off, but could be nice.

It\'s a pity their isn\'t an \'open\' competition to rival the GDs

Because, at the moment it\'s a bit like Ferrari sponsoring a Ferrari only Formula One.

Hang on...that sounds almost too close to reality to be true....:D But at least other marques can enter:flip:
