GW supermodels

I remember reading in an old white dwarf something about how to impress the judges at the GD\'s. it went along the lines of \" don\'t try and paint the newest mini around because we have seen them for ages (pre-production) , we are far more likely to appreciate an old classic given a new and exciting interpretation than the latest off the press new race.\" i think for these reasons certain modls are a big hit with us painters. some kits also have a good record for casting quality too, and nice detail. (just how many lotr witch kings/ maw of sauron have you seen take a demon home??) the Gazgul model has won multiple times (a slayer sword.......and at this years UK GD....it is still a kick ass model)
sometimes having a good strong base mini for a concept can help out when the sculpting skill is not there. but in all branches of the arts there are the cliche minis.

Last year at LD gamesday, there were several tyranid minis that place. I think in single mini form they could be converted and painted really creatively, since you aren\'t limited to a humaniod form. I also think they could make a great diorama or battle scene if used properly. Some kind of ambush like in Starship Troopers or Aliens come to mind. What are your thoughts people???

I think maybe one of the reasons it\'s hard to pull off a top notch bugs piece might be because the flavor text is so well done. It describes them in a way that gets your mind flowing on the inspeakable/unimaginable horrors that come along with them. So that when trying to put them into a miniature form, it\'s hard to match the mental imagines that have been created? It\'s just a thought, and I know whenever I see even a really well done tyranid, it never seems to live up to my expectations from my imagination.

They\'re one of those races that their mystique is based on what is not seen, they\'re horror monsters, and the bad guy from horror films is never THAT scarey face to face.

Either that or I could be totally wrong :D

I think the reason for the dreds\' popularity (forgot about them!) is that they\'re one of the smallest vehicles in 40K, hence many people prefer painting them over huge and comlicated models like Eldar Cobra and such. And well, it might as well be the personality thing.

@Medved: you know, in fact, there\'s one thing I noticed at 2004 GD: the judges don\'t exactly stick to the rules (and whatever they say in articles), they just choose what looks good to them (for instance, they kept saying things about bases, and as you can see, some of the winners have disregarded the rules -- and still won). As for choosing the newest models, I think it should remain the entrant\'s decision.

If you check my gallery you\'ll see that i\'m guilty of the \'Celestine with wings\' offence...

In my defence i had this model sometime before it was released, and i thought [and still think] that it\'s an awesome sculpt. The thing is i a) don\'t collect SOB, and b)i don\'t use special characters anyway... so my immediate thought was to turn her to chaos for use in my Slaanesh army...

So, joking aside, i have a winged Celestine slaaneshi champion... lol

The 2003 LAGD second place battle scene(Matt Gubser) used a swarm of bugs. You can see a bunch of pics in his gallery at www.prophet-miniatures.com.

However there is no battle scene category in the US this year, only duel.(Serves me right for starting my Battle Scene entry before I knew the category was eliminated)

So you could do it, but you\'d have to enter it into the open category, as I might do(only I\'m not using bugs).

Yes, definitely. I\'m tempted to do something with bugs this year.

I was thinking of doing a diorama with a horde of Hormagaunts jumping off of a cliff onto a land speeder.

Damn, I guess I\'ll do a assault marine Necron Wraith HtH combat.
or a group of marine scouts swarming over a Necron lord.
