Half Timbered Cottage

I don\'t see too many terrain pieces here, but here is one.

http://www.coolminiornot.com/180961

This piece is done in several steps.
The foundation and door is carved from pink foam.
The second and third stories are formed from foamcore.
The windows are made from balsa, and a couple are from Mordheim. Those are all then put in place.
Next is the roof, first a base of cardboard is put on, then the chimney, then the shingles are laid from the bottom up. After that comes balsa woodwork on the building.

Any feedback is appreciated, good or bad, it\'s all learning.
Thanks alot guys.

Um... can I come play WFB at your house?

=P

That\'s a great terrain piece, man. Very cool.

Hmm... as far as critique. The framing work on the upper story seems a little heavy. \'Specially when compared to the plank and iron work on the door below. Love the dormers. Love the chimneys. The top floor seems a little massive compared to the bottom. But, dude! You have peasants and a pumpkin patch.

Again... very, very cool.

Looks accurate to me. Seen quite a number of houses still like it in York and Stratford on Avon.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate them all.

arogers907: I will take into consideration what you have said about the timbers. Are they too massive as in too wide? or too thick?
As for the bulk of the upstairs to the bottom, well it is a bit much, but it was my intention afterall, to make the building look as if it could collapse at any moment.lol
Even so, perhaps it could be scaled back.

thecat: look for a message from me buddy.

Oh, I don\'t know if it\'s architecturally/historically accurate or not. Personally favor a fanciful design over some hyper-realistic period recreation and this thing looks awesome.

My comment on the timbers was simply how imposing they are. For me, they dominated the model (in photos, at least) and pulled attention from some of very nice structural stuff in the lower floor, the masonry, etc.

Now, you said you were going for a \'collapse at any moment\' feel. Heh... massive is perfect for that.

In the end what\'s the difference, you have one slammin\' piece of scenery there. And, if the hour and a half I just spent slobbering over your gallery is any indication, it\'s in good company! Hehe =P

That is a good point. Any ideas why Terrain is so under-rated? Even within the terrain board, a piece seems to need to be massive to score high, even if it\'s massive and bad. Any idea?

First time I\'ve come across your stuff. This led me to your gallery. Brilliant, highly inspirational and some of the best (if not the best) scratch built stuff I\'ve seen. I shall be stealing, err I mean referencing them in some future projects.

thanks, I do the exact same thing. I\'ve got a folder filled with hundreds of pictures of medieval stuff and other peoples terrain pices. Take inspiration anywhere you can find it.
