Halloween is coming!

Thanks, some of them are patterns, and some are ones we made. There\'s even a pumpkin my Pops did of me while i was at college, but didn\'t post that one \'cause i\'m sure everyone\'s had enough of my ugly mug. You can normally go to a wall mart, or drug store and find a kit that come with a little orange handled exacto-saw, a little orange plastic twist drill, a little orange pattern poker and it\'ll all come with a book of patterns. Pick out the ones you want and head down to the library to make copies. Nothing to it really.
Here\'s an online place with some good patterns;

Almost forgot... isn\'t the reason for Halloween so that girls can wear their underwear and a pair of animal ears around in the freezing cold all night?:innocent:

Absolutely! These pumpkins and other Halloween oddities are just a distraction from Halloween\'s true purpose - Hallowed Eve.

I did some digs with the Oklahoma Archaeological Society a few years back. Every October they have a pumpkin carving competition...using only stone tools!

yeah, yeah, yeah

Well, i came from a wood worker background (Grandpa, Pops and myself all do some kind of widdleing or releive carving) so the pumpkins are a fun way to show our craft and artistic bend. Plus the kiddies and their parents really seem to like them, so that keeps us coming back each year.

To be quite honest I doubt most Americans know the origins of Halloween. Most probably don\'t even know that it\'s the evening before a Christain holliday (hence all hallow\'s eve or halloween)

I doubt most anybody know the origins of halloween. So there:
Its originally the feast day of the celtic god Samhain, god of the dead, and its also the end of summer, the end of the celtic year. In the last night of the year the dead are allowed to walk on earth again and the people feast to celebrate the good dead and simultaneously try to scare away the evil dead by fire and horrible masks. Christianisation not being able to snuff that custom adopted it into all-hallowes-eve, the day (Nov 1st) of remembering for dead saints (german: Allerheiligen), and as an afterthought into an remembering day for beloved but just ordinary dead - ones dead mother for example - as well (Nov 2cnd, german: Allerseelen). ---- Personal remark: I use to light a red candle at 31st Oktober on the grave of my parents to tell them I love them ----

There are in short 4 essential dates in the celtic year of old. Counterpoint to halloween is 30th April (german Walpurgisnacht), the day when summer begins. Other dates are the solstice days 21st of June and 21st december when the sun turns cycle.

Thanks for backing me on that G-Nome. I was awaiting the backlash of the PC police. They seem to be everywhere these days. I keep saying that I am going to make it up there to meet you. I am still trying to get through my busy schedule.

No one knows about Halloween in Korea unless they go to or work in an english hagwon (small private language school)
For example we will all be dressing up and turning all the rooms into I dont know what yet, but you can rest assured there will be witches ghosties pumkins and spiders galore.
There may well even be face paint shudders* We have the day \"off\" tommorrow to go in and prepare it all. It will take all day and lots of glue and black paper. However it seems I have scored the Lego room and thats got to be good :)

Im not sure however if they know about it in the understanding-why-its-done-what-its-all-about-and -its historical-context way or know about it in the Its-on-friday-its-scary-and-everyone-gets -lots-of-candy way.

At college we have the day off for \"Teacher Training\". However I reckon the only reason we have the day off is so the teachers can perform satanic rituals without us getting in the way :)

Wonderful!

But it\'s got f*ck all to do with pumpkins, monsters and demanding goods with menaces. Anyone who knocks on my door uninvited gets extremely short shrift.

Actually the pumpkins were meant to scare away evil spirits, where the giving 15 year olds who arnt even wearing a costume sweets comes from I have no idea

It probably comes from the fear of getting your yard toilet papered or car egged.lol
