Harbinger issue 3

Hi Guys,

Jenova, NP, my whip was getting a little stiff from lack of use, it\'s good to give it a run out occasionally.

Glad you like Andy\'s articles, I spend each month waiting for the next one to come in!

Finn, with regards to newsagents and in particular WHSmith yes we DO issue guidelines - we also spent £10,500 on in store promotions via WHSmith only to learn (via an internet thread) that not only were some WHsmiths returning the magazine the day it arrived due to lack of space with their new Christmas promotions, but that customers were being told that their local WHSmith had never stocked and would never stock Harbinger.

This is a problem that comes down to individual stores, bassically if the YTS kid who stocks the magazine racks can\'t find a space for our latest issue it\'s much less hassle for him to simply ship their entire order back rather than go to the effort of remerchandising the shelf space. Not only this but it seems that individual store managers have begun to take it upon themselves to censor wargames magazines by either placing them on higher shelves or simply not stocking them at all.

We are less than happy with this situation, imagine my surprise when I phoned a particular branch of WHSmith to enquire as to whether or not they stocked Harbinger and was told that they never had, never would and my best option was to subscribe.

Imagine THEIR surprise when I informed them that I worked for Harbinger and knew perfectly well that they HAD received stock, they SHOULD be stocking the magazine and that as we are £10,500 worse off due to the agreement between us and their head office I wanted their name and would be mentioning them when I speak to their employers thank you very much and goodbye...

The situation SHOULD be remedied, however we would appreciate it if people would keep an eye open and let us know if their WHSmith proves obtuse when it comes to the availability of our magazine. Unfortunately due to the sheer size of WHSmith and the number of outlets we can never be 100% sure that each store will follow the guidelines no matter what orders are handed down from their head office. It seems that individual local-level managers take it into their heads to make decisions that are not theirs to make...

So please, if you know of a WHSmith that isn\'t doing us justice let us know!

Many thanks

Jamie

Well I can tell you a store that is doing you justice and that is Birkenhead Merseyside. I just called in looking for something else(No Finn - - not Routers for experts) when low and behold there is a huge supply of Harbinger right onthe shelf next to White Dwarf and Military Modelling.
Congrats Jamie, you\'d arrived properly.

Hi Jamie,

I did enquire before I got a subscription at our local WH Smiths in Norwich. They said that they must have sold out of issue 2 and that the next issue was due in a couple of weeks. I think that was mid October.

I also mentioned the new mag to The Games Room in Norwich, he sounded quite interested in stocking it- is there a distributer he can contact or something?

BTW did you get the pic I sent you? From jodale22@hotmail.com? I\'m going to try and get some new ones (more moon puppies) done at the weekend and if they turn out well I\'ll email them to you. Can you give us some guidelines as to what resolution/pic size you prefer?

Thanks,

Kat

WH Smith is fab and groovey in Exeter

Hey Harbinger, I\'m pleased to say that my local WHS is doing just fine with Harbinger. I have several friends who have picked up copies from other branches too, so perhaps the SW is a good place for you :D

I did find that Harbinger was placed a little away from other mags in the same field, ie War Games Monthly, Military Modeller etc, but after a brief moment of panic I found it *phew*

WH Smiths in St. Austell....

Wow! Until recently it was ruled by a cat called Arthur. Arthur was about 708 years old and I have had to wait in the queue because they had difficulty using the till, \'cos Arthur had decided to fall asleep over the (hot) motor. No-one was prepared/allowed to move him...:D

Arthur normally sat on the chair behind the till and just generated hairs as cats do. You have never seen a hairier till:D

Enough about Arthur..but I wont hear a word against my local WHS staff as they all seem to regard me as an old friend and apart from the fact that they all seem to tolerate complete gits treating the place as a library, they generally do a really good job.

WHS management nationally however, might be a different kettle of fish. I have noticed that in the last couple of weeks they have compacted 4 racks of magazines into 2. This is simply to make room for the utter crap they want to sell folk at Christmas. Personally, this appalls me and I have no doubt that this marketing ploy will have a deleterious effect on the sales of a number of mags, including Harbinger, which is a crime, cos WHS = Mags:mad:

Brushlicker and Freak!
Just got issue 2.
I think it might have been a REALLY bad idea for me, I have cupboards full of unpainted minis and I\'m now being exposed to a host of new manufacturers... aaarrrgh the temptation.

The two minis are awesome, really nice models.

I have resigned myself to not just being a mini-painter, but a \"world class collector\"....It doesn\'t prove much, but it does help justify my \"full cupboards\"...lollol

I believe this was Finn\'s idea, but I happily adopted this way of life!!

So, also, taking this yet a step further, a subscription to Harbinger, is nothing more than quality research (as are all the hours I spend here on CMON), but as a \"serious world class collector\" it is my obligation to do so!lollol

Issue 3

OMG! I just looked at the Harbinger website... what on earth did they do to my beastlord pic?

I can relate to your surprise. They have really changed the look of my water elemental as well. When I have their pic up side by side to the one I have on my site you can really see a difference.

They sure are different...

Here is the Harbinger pic:

Here is the CMON pic:

Still though, it is a very cool mini. I think the Harbinger lost some detail and the blue background really doesn\'t help either.

very nice....

Just got my Harbinger Issue Three in the mail. Excellent stuff.

Actually, I got both my White Dwarf Mag and the Harbinger mag in the mail the same day, and I ripped into the Harbinger right away!

The casting article, as Finn mentioned somewhere above, is by far my favorite part of the mag. Andy\'s writing is a hoot to read, and I actually learned a thing or two.

Hopefully, there wasn\'t a \'free mini\' giveaway with this issue, because I didn\'t get one.

I got issue 4 today (oh actually it was yesterday since its now 4.25 am.)). There wasn\'t a mini with issue 3 but theres supposed to be one with this issue. Unfortunately they\'ve had problems casting them in enough quantities so it\'s going to be shipped out seperately at a later date. Still, the issue looks good, it\'s got some suggested armies for Confrontation and a scenario with devourers as well. Haven\'t had a good look at the issue yet.

Kat

nitpickey....

If I were to complain a little about the magazine, i would have to say it is about the pages with the bright backgrounds, and then the lettering is also bright, and almost impossible to read without getting a headache.

Also some of the letter spacing on pages (I think its called Kernaling) is very discombobulating.

Still, I believe those are growing pains, and should all be worked out.:)

I find it difficult to read the black ink when it is on the dark purple background. The purple is ok for most of the page, but when it gets dark in places I feel like an old woman trying to work out what the words are!!

Our de-discombobulator is only just learning. He\'s a pre-de-discombobulator, if you will. :) Getting better though, all-the-time.

I got issue 4 through the post this morning

I haven\'t had much of a chance to study it in any great detail yet, but I have to say that from first glance it looks great. There is a big article from Andy at Heresy Miniatures on assembling the Netherlord which I am particularly looking forward too, although any tips will be too late for me as mine is already together...unpainted...but together:D

Yep, join the club. Us coffin dodgers have exactly the same problem. The thing looks good but it\'s a buggar to read. Editors of Harbinger and White Dwarf please take note.

Gotta agree with Shaz and Mike here too. It\'s not just coffin dodgers that have a problem with the page colour. A paler background would be preferable I think. :D
