Hello all! Is Harbinger magazine worth buying? (i mean get a subscription on)

Normally i buy a single mag to check it out and if i like it i\'ll buy more. But here in Amsterdam i can\'t find them in any bookstore or any other store that might sell them.

I\'m sure you lovely folks will have some feedback for me!

P.s. Any other mags worth trying out?:)

minimags...

Yes, a subscription is definately worth it.

That way you get all the free minis just sent to you with the mag.

Harbinger has improved with just about every issue, IMHO. While it is not quite the slick super professional White Dwarf, it is pretty well done.

I admit freelly to skipping over a few of the articles I don\'t find an interest in. But with the mini reviews, painting articles, terrain articles, game system ideas...etc. etc. it is definately worth a subscription.

As for other mags...I know some folks have talked of Rackhams \"Ravage\" and more recently \"Cry Havoc\", and by all accounts, they are extremely well done (all though all in french) but I have yet to see one.

For a mag that still deals with jpainting strange little people, check out \"Amazing Figure Modeller\"....it mostly deals with larger \'garage kits\' but it always has some very cool stuff....

Minimags...

Well...

1) I have let my subscription to White Dwarf expire. Hugely overpriced and just one vast advert for their own product. I realised I was reading less and less of it each month. The last straw was the amount turned over to LOTR which I have absolutely no interest in whatsoever. The cheesy GW product that is, not the books and films.

2) I subscribed to Harbinger right from the beginning and will happily renew my subscription when it is due. Supervike is correct when he says that it has improved every issue and IMO it is worth the cost for the figures alone. Nice one Uncle Hex
:D

3) I bought the first, French edition of Cry Havoc even though I couldn\'t read a word. I have now bought a copy of the English version as it has only just been released. If you like Rackham I would recommend it, if you don\'t like Rackham leave it alone. Like WD it only showcases Rackham products/games etc. However, it makes WD look like a school newsletter in comparison as it is superior in every conceivable way. I am not saying that as a Rackham fan, it is simply that no expense has been spared and it clearly shows. This is not a magazine you have to shove under the settee when visitors call...:D

I agree about the White Dwarf. Nowadays i read through it like a Roadrunner on speed!

Although i\'m more of a GW guy i happily drool over the nice Rackham/Confrontation pics!

AMEN - I HATE their coverage of LOTR and the lame minis that come with it. I can\'t wait till they drop that game.

Yeah, I still read White dwarf, but to be honest, I only read the fantasy part of the book....I have no interest in the 40k stuff, and like the others said, the LOTR stuff is best left alone. I do peruse through the pics and such, but I am basically spending all that dough for 1/3 of a mag!

That\'s good going...

If you can squeeze 1/3 of useful material out of a WD I reckon that is good.

Over the last few months I read it, I estimate I averaged 4-7 pages of interesting material. Most of them were adverts for upcoming material.

try waterstones in the Kalverstraat(corner spui), since they\'re a british book and magazine sellers they\'ll be able to get it, if they don\'t sell it already. Other one to try is The ABC.

They have cottoned on to that in the UK and WDs all come in sealed polly bags now.

Which is why you go to the store and ask to have a look through the store copy to decide if you want to buy it, done it about 4 times now in the same store, may be pushing my luck now

Trevor

Brushlicker and Freak!
I actually like reading WD, although the LOTR stuff is a bit boring (not sure why, the exception is the terrain stuff for LOTR which is awesome).

So whats the english version of the Rackham mag? Where can I get it?

;)

@Trevor There is a French magazine called Ravage which heavily features Rackham. I understand it is independent, a bit like Harbinger and it is only available in French.

Rackham\'s own mag is called \'Cry Havoc\' the French edition came out a little while ago and they have just released it in English. You can get it from their mail order site. It is kinda expensive, but worth every penny IMO.

pfah....rubbish. I can tell the city went downhill since I left lollollollol

hmmmm..... I can\'t think of any other place that would have it, I mean, The Gamekeeper is an atrocious place nowadays, that rather sells chessboards than be the proper Game shop it used to be. I remember when it was still Compendium, now THAT was a proper Games shop...went bust though ;)

Euhm....there aren\'t any other games stores in amsterdam as far as I know, Gameskeeper and sir Ludemus were the only ones I know, but Ludemus went bust(can you see a pattern here?)

Is that place near the far end of line 2 still there? the comic shop that started to sell games? Maybe you can try The Cave in utrecht....

The Cave doesn\'t exist anymore either! Well, sort of! It\'s now called the Elf. (of all the names they can choose from, they took \"The Elf\"!:|~) But i\'ll give them a call to find out.

And yes, Amsterdam went a bit awry! You remember all those flashy, for young girl, (or wanna be young girls;)) clothing stores? Well let\'s just say they breeded and have multiplied a lot since then!:(

There are now some stores that sell some GW stuff, but they will never have a lot of succes as they:

1) Have a rather small stock.
2) Don\'t have any knowledge about the game what so ever!

End of line 2? You mean the store that used to be Professor Ich, (where i actually worked, ow the agony! They still owe me money! :flame: ) Which i will never get anymore!) and was called the Twilight zone or sumfin like that afterwards? Nope, they are dead too!:)

Game Keeper, one of the most crappiësts game stores ever!

Compendium.... Let\'s not even go there!;):duh:

How many of the people who have complained about LotR coverage in WD have actually played the game? IMHO it is very good, one of Gw\'s best works of recent years :)

Anyway, getting back to the subject of the thread, Harbinger, I have found it to be a good read, if nothing else, coverage of alternative games and minis is very welcome. As time has gone on, the size and quality of the mag has increased considerably, and although I don\'t have a subscription, I buy it regularly

I have my subscription, and will happily renew it. I wasn\'t impressed by the first 3 editions, especially not the one with all the super-ugly lotr clix models in it, but I have read all of the last ones with great interest. The terrain and painting articles are great, and it\'s a refreshing read!

I confess! I have never played LOTR.

But I would also like to confess that I have never played 40K, Warhammer, Confrontation, Warmachine.....etc. You name it...and I haven\'t played it.

So I am not criticising the workings of the gaming mechanism.

IMO, the whole project is just a cheap, cynical piece of exploitation riding on the back of Peter Jackson\'s masterpiece
:D

Okay, okay...Tolkien did the ground work:D
