I have bought the #8 of Harbinger in UK and was so impressed to subscribe it.
I will recommend it to everyone for the painting articles, the good pictures and the range of miniatures brand covered.

Well I think it\'s great. You may presume I am biased...and you\'d be right!

I was also quite impressed with #8 - and you aren\'t kidding about the range of models. I particularly liked the article on Dr. Frankenstein\'s Lab. I\'m building those bookshelves for my dungeon terrain set.

White dwarf is nice for what it does - and I still read it - but Harbinger provides a breadth of the hobby that WD simply can\'t (being GW and all).

How many of the people who have complained about LotR coverage in WD have actually played the game? IMHO it is very good, one of Gw\'s best works of recent years

I didn\'t explain myself very well. I like the LOTR minis (although they are a royal pain to paint). I like the look of the game, although I\'ve only done one demo. Its just the WD articles are a little, I dunno flat?

I\'ve never played Confrontation, but the coverage in Harbinger has me very interested and I bought Hybrid after the coverage of that. The WD LOTR stuff just doesn\'t make me go \"I have to get this now to play\".

Harbinger is steadily improving, the best bit is still the minis, but I will renew my subscription.

oh compendium....bless....i\'ve got some good(and bad) memories of thatr place, you can say anything about thethen owners and their \'business\' sense, but fact remains it was one, if not the, first game store in holland, and for a long while the only shop you could get Gw stuff...hehehehehe...oh well. Maybe I should come back one day and show amsterdam what a proper game store really is....

@Skrit: The larger W.H.Smiths stores carry them, but not all the Smaller stores as Harbinger is classed as a Fringe market.
But I\'m sure that the friendly bunch that is CMON would help out if asked.

As to the \'debate\' over White Dwarf it\'s marketed as a Hobby and Catalogue supplement for GW. Which is why it is the way it is. I have a subscription, but the last two issues I haven\'t read yet. Neither really having anything to \'Hook me in\' interest wise.
Harbinger, I find to have got better with each issue, and despite the fact that the comic strip has disappeared, I usually find a great deal of interest in each issue.

they used to hav it there yes, don\'t know right now though, but the best bet is the american bookstore they have a load of those mags.

As for white dwarf I agree and only buy it for the sparingly new rules that are in there...

As DR said, WH Smiths stocks Harbinger in England, there\'s at least one of those in most major cities. Both the ones in Nottingham (in the city centre and Beeston) stock it

I would be happy with that...

I have nothing against that as a notion, but then the exhorbitant price 5GBP or just over $9 is outrageous for a \'catalogue supplement\'.

I take my hat off to them however. It is a marketing masterpiece;)

WD is £4 not £5! Dunno where your £5 comes from?

Personally I quite like WD. Lots of pics to look at and drool over. Then again I don\'t hate GW (I can be critical of them though. I\'m not a fanboy).

Harbinger does seem to be getting better as well.

Perhaps my eyesight is going....

But I was sure the last copy I looked at in W. H. Smiths said 4.99...

Senility sets in...;)

*EDIT* You are quite right. Just checked the GW website....I am going blind.

Perhaps it\'s just that WD is priced in round pounds. Every other magazine is always X.99.

I don\'t hate GW either. It\'s just that I seem to lose a little more respect for them with every year that passes:~(

Yeah I know where you\'re coming from on that! While the figures (mostly) have improved in the last 5 Years, there are still accusations of Money Hungry Vampires floating around.

Or as one disgruntled ex-retail employee once said to me: \"I feel like I\'ve just been told to squeal like a pig!\".

To be honest, I think the existence of GW helps the other firms in the industry considerably. Gw helps in getting the hobby known to the masses, but like others have said, they can\'t cater to everyone\'s tastes, and that is where the other firms come in

If there\'s a problem with WD LotR coverage, its that there\'s not enough people working on it. I mean, the vast majority of the Wd LotR material is written by Allessio Cavatore and Mat Ward, and unlike most of the people who write the WD material for 40k and warhammer, they have the added duties of devloping the game itself and the supplements

The thing that I like most about Harbinger is the showcase, the fact that the average joe* can submit minis and get them in the mag, that is very cool

*I am not refering to the dodgy tv program
