Harbinger of the North

I have just uploaded my version of the Harbinger of the North: http://www.coolminiornot.com/58671

Now I am looking for some feedback. What do you like? Dislike? Why? So many questions... :innocent:

I am really trying to improve. I have hit an 8.1 or 8.2 with a few of my minis but can\'t seem to score higher. What do I need?

Thx for your time :)

Well as soon as I saw mention of a barbarian I had to rush off to look.... very nice! I left you a comment. Not that this made me vote lower or anything, but I (IMHO) think the face would look even better if the eyebrows were done.

I really like the stubble effect you have going. Mini looks out of proportion though, not sure what exactly, painting is great though.

Really great. The eyes are not overly good, but I can\'t do it better, ask someone else for help on this one ;)

Damn. I just have to find someone in Germany where I can get that miniature...

Thanks for the comments and the feedback :)

@Primeval:
Yes, the eyebrows ... let\'s just pretend there was an ... err ... accident ... in his youth ;)

@NecroN:
That he was a bit out of proportion was my first thought about the mini when I held it in my hand. I felt the head was probably too big, but after painting him I think the proportions are ok.

Yes, I added the kilt myself. One of my first humble attempts to use GreenStuff more creatively than for filling gaps or bases :]

Very nice work. I gave him a 9, so I really don\'t know what else you could do to improve it. As has already been said, I really like the stubble effect. Looks particularly appropriate on a barbarian. Other than the eyebrow thing, I don\'[t know what could have improved it for me. I guess, if pressed, the skin tone transitions could be just a snitch smoother, but that\'s really niggling.

I know! Perhaps if he had SENMM hair! :D OR if you\'d painted up the kilt to be translucent :D Or lied and put down \"Rackham\" as the manufacturer lol

very nice...

I thought the same thing (about the figure being a little out of proportion) when I received my mini as well.

I think it is something around the waistline and upper thigh area.....

Still just a minor quibble with such a great mini, and you have certainly done it justice!!

Good work, and thank you for not doing the see through kilt;)

sorry for the double post....

I just happen to be reading the 2nd Novel in the Gav Thorpe\'s Slave to Darkness series. It is called \"The Blades of Chaos\"
as I was looking at the Harbinger of the North, I happen to glance down at the cover of this book.

Here it is:

Coincedence? The mini looks very similar, but heck the guy on the cover even has a kilt!! Cool!

Barb, Barb, Barb, Hey Barbra Man

Nicely painted mini. I\'ve got mine stashed away, along with all the other ones. Guess I should paint them really :rolleyes:

I\'ve left my two penneth worth and a score - I also asked how you did the skin tone, i.e. what colours.

@Supervike: I have never seen the cover, but it looks indeed very similar :wow:

@Tooshy: The skin started with a mix of Dark Flesh, Elf Flesh and a drop or two of purple. I highlighted by adding Elf Flesh for a few layers and finally a bit of white for the final two or so layers. Sometimes I added glazes of a Dark Flesh/Purple mix between layers to unify the blends and define the shadows were I felt this was necessary.
Oh, and I painted over black primer.

Mine just arrived, its an awesome mini.

Yes it is - I had to get two so I can convert one (much to the chagrin of NSA I am sure lol) to wield 2 axes instead of sword and axe.

Still laughing...

No problem :)
Sorry, forgot to mention the manufacturer. The Purple is Vallejo Model Color, all the others are Vallejo Game Color :]
