hard to reach spots

most minis have them, those spots where you can hardly reach, or that are just too small and depressed to achieve anything like a smooth blend...

many of these areas are pretty much invisble, but on the Emperor's Champion i'm painting at the moment, there's a couple on really visible places...

so... how to paint these spots...

paint them in the highlight color and gently wash them?

or highlight from a base color up?

or is there another way i have'nt thought of that works even better?

the mini in guestion is a display piece, painted in (off-)white, with red shoulders and cloth....
I'll post some pictures when i can...

patience, and some cursing...
that's the secret...
on the hard to reach spots, i just hope to get it right on the first go...

i don't paint them any differently...
basecoat dark, and work my way up...
fix the mistakes...

the biggest difference is that the hard to reach spots usually require the most contorted sitting position to reach properly...
i usually end up looking like a pretzel...
gets the job done though...

cheers

If you can identify the spots early on it helps to paint them before painting surrounding areas, as you can be messy that way. It's easier to get hard-to-reach spots painted decently if you can allow yourself to paint outside the boundaries. It is then easy to clean up and overpaint the surrounding areas.
