I wanna model a few 'corn stalks' on a miniature base. Anyone ever seen that done? Or better yet, suggestions on how to, and what to do it with.

I'm all ears....(groan)

cant say ive seen it done before. id make 'em in a very similar manner to cattails. take a thin wire, then sculpt the cob at the top (just a long blob of putty, let it firm, then texture with the tip of a mechanical pencil to texture the corn). after that double layer some tape and cut it in to the shape of a piece of grass (triangular-ish). midway up the stalk glue one corner of the leaf to the wire. wrap it around the wire, and glue the free bottom corner. bend the free tip (top) out like a corn leaf. wrap another, overlapping below the first, in a similar fashion. repeat as necessary. smooth out cracks etc. w/ greenstuff. it might take a few practice runs w/ the leaves to get the effect you want, but it should work.

I'd take a thin piece of wood, a branch or something similar that's about the right size for the main stalk, drill small holes in it for 0.6mm steel wire or whatever size you can get a hold of. Then I'd cut excessive lengths of wire, perhaps 5cm or so, just enough to get a comfy grip. Roll a cigar at one end of the length and do the corny part of the job. Let them cure. Meanwhile, take an old plastic bag, cut two pieces out of it and place a fair ball of putty between them and roll it (very) thin, you might need to oil the plastic slightly. Let that cure for 10-15 min and then cut it in small lengths, just enough to make four lengths cover one cigar. Remove the plastic on one side, fasten it at the pin side of the cigar, remove the other piece of plastic and shape it the way you want it. Rince, repeat. When these have cured, cut the wire and glue them to the main stalk. Repeat the procedure with the plastic bag for the larger leafs only let it cure for 20-30 min before starting to work on them.
Hope it helps! Sounds like great fun to sculpt, might just try it out myself. Cheers and good luck!

i like the twisting idea. you could combine it with my suggestion by sandwiching a thin (beading) wire between tape at the top, shaping the leaf, proceeding as described in the tutorial, then smoothing the stalk with greenstuff. you know i may have to try that technique on some other type of plant...

Great ideas, and thanks for the Terragenesis link...I actually searched there before I posted and never saw that!

I'll give this stuff a try, and see what works best.

I promote you all to Kernals...

(sorry for the puns, don't stalk me...)

Alternatively.. you can buy ready made corn stalks from military and rail-road modeling places

For example
http://www.milminwh.com/mmw_gw.htm
(scroll all the way down)
OR here
http://www.sceneryexpress.com/prodinfo.asp?number=BH1202

Actually, if you are habitually designing sceneries I would download the whole catalog of the second place and keep it handy somewhere. Be warned - it is big :)

You can also use brass etched corn as described in here

Good find Mr. Skeeve!

I appreciate that. If nothing else, it gives me a great guide for my own stalks!

The photos are a little grain-y, however...

(jeez, I just can't help it!)
