having a problem

finally got round to a bit of painting the other day and ran into a problem. as amazing as my technique is (rofl) my paint seem to be letting me down. i was using a mixture of ivory and tallarn flesh on cd (i use them as my palettes). i had added a small amount of w+n flow improver and water to it to get it nice an thin as well. however, every time i painted with it, it seemed to almost separate so that i was either painting with water or undiluted paint so the result was shite and streaky

ok, it\' drying on the cd i thought. so i made some up on my wet palette. same thing. i tried using just the ivory but it stayed the same

any ideas? i shook it up good and proper too. i would show you pics but i left the model at home with my parents at the w/e and also the paints. i just don\'t want the 3 hours a year i spend painting to be with me getting nowhere!

well this sounds strange...
What colors do you use (GW, Vallejo etc.)?
Did you try the mixture without the flow improver? I sometimes had some problems with my flow improver, so currently I am working without it.

the foundation paints are a bugger for seperating, you have to stir the mix every time it happens mate.

you can also use it to your advantage as well for differant blending techniques

True, the foundations separate a lot on the palette. It\'s like that scene from Friends where Chandler and Ross try making instant Cappucino at home and have to keep stirring it while they drink it. They\'re lovely paints but you do have to re-stir before loading your brish each time. Once on the mini it\'s usually fine though.

I\'d just blame the CD mate lol , it\'s obvious it wouldn\'t be my fault! We both come from the same school....ohhhh yes, I can match your technique.

i am used to the problem with the foundation paints and my painting style when using them is indeed very similar to chandler and ross\' cappuccino drinking! the bit that shocked me was the fact that the vallejo model colour ivory was doing in fact worse than the gw one! when i am painting, it comes out streaky as hell and looks shite beyond belief. it\'s really frustrating as i don\'t want to loose my enthusiasm (it doesn\'t last long anyway!) or ruin any more models. if i am going to ruin them, it\'ll be on my terms!!

Sounds like a problem I had with some watery GW paints. It took a lot of shaking in the pot (adding a little bit of metal as an agitator. If that didn\'t work, i added a bit of glaze medium to bind it all better.

I find Vallejo are an ARSE for separation, damn you high pigment content!!!

The fix all: Vallejo Glaze Medium, binds the pigment to the medium even when watered down. OR any gel medium, I have some W&N.

This idea was stolen from GeneralPoleaxe, so I can accept no plaudits.

i put agitators in all my bottles and was using w+n matte medium with it too. bugger. i guess i didn\'t shake hard enough! i shall have another go at the w/e and go nuts! thanks guys

use a Matte Medium... my shining gold (GW) always separates and I have to add like 2 drops medium per drop of paint (and 2-3 drops water).
