I was googling images for inspiration for a snake mini I intend to paint, and found this amazing image:

Wow! That\'s crazy! How the hell does that work? How did it manage to expand it\'s head enough to swallow something like that? I know they can dislocate their jaws, but still.

Reminds me of this: snake vs gator

Talk about having eyes bigger than belly.

And I thought I had a bit appetite. :drunk:

Pregnant Ewe, does that make it two meals for the effort of one? :drunk:

It\'s my understanding from the many hours I\'ve put into channels such as animal planet that the snake can survive for a year off that single meal. Neato.

A Farmer I knew, hated sheep and used to say that a Sheeps only ambition in life was to find somewhere \"Bl**dy Akward to lie down and die\".

The skin between the two botton jaw halves is very stretchy so it can open it\'s mouth very wide, although, apparently not wide enough to swallow a human (due to the shoulders) unless it tries it with the shoulders vertically.

That croc one was on a tv documentary. They discovered that because the hide of the croc, actually I think it was an alligator, is tough, the enzymzes take a long time to break it down. In the meantime the corpse is decomposing and getting bloated, which eventually ruptured the snake from the inside.

I don\'t think that dog is a pitbull. I can just about make out that it\'s an English terrier.

It looks like a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which is very similar to an American Pit Bull Terrier.

However, I still don\'t think it\'s particularly funny.

I remember seeing photos of some constrictor having eaten (and subsequently ralphing up) a pygmy hippo.

Like the quilled dog, you have to wonder what in the world is going through their head at the time. A dog in pain is not funny. The absurd circumstances that led there can be.

Pit bulls are not generally the brightest bulbs in the bunch. \"That thing hurt me, it must die.\"
Never a thought that the other critter might be tougher or meaner or anything -er than it\'s own self.

Snakes jaws dislocate to allow the mouth to open to tremendous diameters. Glad we don\'t have too many of those around here - just the occasional one that gets let go from some idiot.

@Airhead That snake that ate the \'gator was in Florida. Like you say, it\'s because some people have let them loose and now they\'re breeding.

As Airhead said, snakes can dislocate their jaws in 4 places to swallow food thats more than 4 times their head size I believe.
An interesting note to add to that, however gross that is, a meal that size could take up to two weeks to digest and the snake could then go without eating for up to a year with a meal that size

I\'ve read some funny stories (well they\'re not) that some snakes have been known to escape their tanks in zoo\'s / homes and eaten pet dogs and cats and as my mate found out with his 2 ft Boa his hamster mysteriously vanished.

I was in Thailand and we watched a green viper track, catch and swallow some very large lizard (looked like an iguana of some kind but I am not Bill and do not have a head for such things). It was too big for him and he had to stop about halfway through and rest for a good long while. Only after the fact did we discover it was a green viper one of the deadliest snakes in the world. I doubt we would have gotten that close before he had the other critter halfway down his gullet. I had pics at one time - though I have no idea where they are nowadays.
