I think you may read things into these things that may not necessarily be true. Just because someone posts a thread about a deceased celebrity and people express sympathies with his/her family doesn\'t mean that said people actually feel stronger about these people than, let\'s say, African children dying of AIDS. It is just a topic that is easier to talk about in a place like this. Lot\'s of people know who Heath Ledger was, many have seen a few of his films, many look forward to seeing him as the Joker in the new Batman film. Talking about it is easy. Talking about the AIDS epidemic, on the other hand, is a very daunting thing. But that doesn\'t mean people don\'t care about it.

Media-induced mass hysteria and mourning has stuck in my craw ever since Diana carked it.

I mean it aint as if the guy was in the same league of talent (or fame) as someone like Hendrix or even Kurt Cobain. Relatively speaking he was a nobody and yet to listen to people you\'d think he was Larry bleeding Olivier!

Folk here had quite had their fill of it. So I struggle to imagine the extent that Diana\'s death was forced down the throat of the average englishman.

It was ridiculous. My grandfather (rest his soul!) was a staunch anti-royalist - he NEVER had a good word to say about them. Diana dies and he lost the plot! I know he was knocking on a bit, but he totally bought all the bullshit foisted on us by the media.

As for all the numpties crying in the streets, anyone\'d think the Ayatollah had just snuffed it!

The thing about famous people is that we tend to think of them as if we know them personally. We refer to them on a first-name basis, we think we know everything about them. No kidding people are gonna get upset when someone they really like dies, no matter the actual distance between them.

I\'m not saying it\'s the same as if you wife dies, but they\'re on the same scale.

So here\'s where I say I\'m sincerely saddened to hear about this, Heath Ledger seemed like one of the good ones in his field. He had dignity in his career moves, trying to make good movies instead of trying to make the most money. He also had kids that he left behind, they\'re probably young enough that they won\'t ever remember their father. That\'s really tragic, and I feel for them too

God bless him, I have no idea his religious standing but I hope he\'s going to the good place. :innocent:

I was gutted when I heard, hoped it wasnt true, he was such a talented actor who in time would have become one of the greats. It is a shame and a great waste regardless of how he died, i just hope in time we remember him for his great acting perfomances, (his upcoming role as \'the Joker\' is said to be his best), and not the facts of how he died. My best regards go to all who loved and respected him. R.I.P.

WTH is it with Cobain? Couldn\'t sing, and wrote like an Emo kid. I seriously don\'t think that\'s any kind of valid comparison there. Hendrix, otoh, did play a mean guitar.

Overall my view on this is that \"the vast majority of men lead lives of quiet desparation\". People whether actors or musicians bring a little relief from that drearyness. When someone who is showing talent and bringing pleasure to however many countless people with their performances dies, regardless of the circumstances, we all feel a little smaller.

Comparing Heath Ledgers death to the terrible AIDS/HIV epidemic and the wave of desolation and hopelessness that brings not only to people living in Africa is to me pointless and somewhat insulting.
As equally as I cannot turn back time to save an AIDS victim or Ledger, please allow me to feel sorrow on behalf of them (and their families) equally.
And as such since I cannot help Heath Ledger or his daughter who are in a much better financial situation, please do not attempt \"prick the conscience\" of one of the countless people who have been silently donating to help the struggle of those living with AIDS/HIV worldwide.

Since when has being a technically gifted singer been a pre-requisite of being a good front for a band? Whatever you think of Cobain or his music, the band were at the vanguard of a new wave of music at the time and he was one of the most famous celebrities in the world at the time of his death.

That was my only point. Ledger was not in the same league of celebrity, yet the media still want to create a circus out of the story.

I\'m gutted to see him go and feel for his daughter. He had a lot og talent and I would of liked to have watched his talent grow.

I agree with DR totally, I give time and money to help fight AIDS/HIV and other causes. This is a singular titled topic not one aimed to express peoples woes with the world!

I\'ve been reluctant to post anything here just cuz folk passing away is a fairly personal subject. Bout the only folk who I feel relief when they pass are folk who choose a life of evil and cruelty (i.e. rapists, murders, drug dealers, ganstas, so on)

I\'m not debating about Cobain being a huge celeb or not, though if you are going to insult his songwriting then you seriously need to consider the subject matter AND commercial appeal. How many artists can transfer their emotions into a song like that and make it something the public will appreciate?
