Help for flat termagant

Okay, here\'s my problem:

The poor little guy is pretty flat. Since I\'m going with a sandy/desert color, I\'m not really sure that trying to do highlights is going to work. Figure I\'ll save that for the marines yet to paint. So that leaves a wash, and thats where I need some advice.

I\'m thinking that just a straight black wash is not going to do well. So, should I try a dark brown wash or light brown? I\'d go ahead and experiment, but that\'s already made one of these guys super ugly (different paint scheme).

Oh, and I guess any other comments would be welcomed as well, even though I\'m most concerned with the wash. And yeah, I know the gray streaks on the carapace are too thick although it doesn\'t show up well in the picture. First time for trying that, so I\'m hoping that by #10 I\'ll be better at it.

Perhaps some darklining instead of a wash would work.

Using a dark brown trace the deepest recesses, espectially where different surfaces meet, like where armoured plates touch flesh or between armoured plates.

I think that would work better then a wash, as a wash often changes the colour of the area you wash over and gets areas other then the recesses.

Yup, go with dark lining in a complementary brown - Burnt Umber would be my choice.

Yup a little dark lining. Even something as light as Graveyard Earth around the back plates could give some more depth. Also, don\'t forget that when you paint your base you\'ll get some contrast out of that.

Lessee. That\'s three votes for lining, nothing for the wash. Think I\'ll try some lining! Thanks for the tips!

As for the blue fleshborer... Oh yeah, its a fleshborer! I just saw a round thing and figured I could practice making jewels. lol Guess I can say its the shell or maybe an egg/cocoon ready to be fired, with the borer hatching after its shot out.

I think you can do both. The darklining will give you good definition between different surfaces and the washes (go light on these, and rather do a couple than one that is too heavy) will give the surfaces some depth. Still not too much work!

That actually was my inspiration to paint them in a bit of a lizard-like fashion. I may attempt the tongue painting for the one of them that has it dangling out. I\'ll save it for near the last so I\'ve got a chance to improve a bit before the attempt.

Bit too black and orange for me. Trying to go for a grayish lizard look, possibly with a yellow belly as a light shading. I probably should look up an image, but figured I caught enough of them in my backyard growing up that I\'ve got a good enough idea. i\'m with ritual. a couple of thin, light washes and some darklining in the really deep recesses and between armour plates etc

Just thought I\'d update this with the results in case somebody comes through later looking for this as reference.

Bear in mind that these are two different termagants, and that I don\'t have the base edges painted, clear-coated, etc.

The picture on top is just the lining while the bottom one has had both. After looking at the pictures, I realize that the wash is a bit splotchy. Thanks again!

This isn\'t really a WIP, so I needed do it, but I will. The final image can be found here. Its a big photo, so I didn\'t put it inline here. I\'ve finished up all the termagants, and did one set of five with a blue gem, the other five with a red gem. No real reason. The biggest disappointment was that the very first \"gem\" I did was much better than all the others. Oh well.
