There are cons, and then there are
cons. I\'ve been to many of both, and actually enjoyed some of the smaller ones (like one my buddy threw a few years ago--Southwest Gamers\' Fair) more than the large ones (like WesterCon).
Thing is, each of them usually have a \"theme\" going for the whole convention. This is a little less so in the smaller cons, but it\'s a mainstay in the bigger ones. Something like \"putting the science back into science-fiction.\"
Anyway, movies are almost ubiquitous, even in the small cons. There are a few mainstays (and you got one, Holy Grail):
- Wizards (been shown at every single con I\'ve been to for the last 20 years)
- Army of Darkness (sometimes the whole Evil Dead trilogy)
- Some kind of anime classic, like Ghost in the Shell, Macross, or (one of my faves) Vampire Hunter D
Along with movies, there\'s often a Friday and Saturday night dance, typically after or as part of the masquerade/costume contest, at least at the bigger cons.
As others have mentioned, one of the mainstays is dealer tables, which can be a bit difficult to arrange for a small thing.
Raffles are a mainstay as well (many places will do volunteer-only raffles, where people who volunteer to help out with the con operations get a special raffle).
Of course, one of the biggest things (other than gaming itself) at cons tend to be the room parties (at least at large cons). There\'s a few that I remember as pretty good, and some so good that I don\'t remember.
