Help me become a football fan.

I have never really gotten football, even during the big events like the world cup I\'m at a loss to gather up any form of interest or enthusiasm for the sport at all. I\'d rather read a book, tap dance or take up knitting or lick the cats arse.

It annoys me because it’s on TV all the time and the games last as long as films. My friends (including my best mate whose a hyper competitive football/sports obsessed guy) all love football, even my partner (a former footy hater) has become interested in \'the beautiful game\' because my best mate has assimilated him into his world of football watching and carling drinking. They both shout at the telly during matches getting very red in the face over things and I feel completely left out.

I sit around for over 90 minutes twiddling my thumbs and grinding my teeth waiting for it to end. The monotonous noise of the crowd washes over me and sends me into a foul black mood. Sometimes football even takes away my beloved Doctor Who because it goes into extra time or whatever its called -how dare it!

But recently I have decided to try something... I\'m sick of the mockery, fed up of being told to go and make everyone cups of tea or get them another can or finding myself so bored I end up doing something like: folding the laundry because I don’t\' fit into their ball kicking world of spirited testosterone joy. I’ve had enough!

I\'m going to try to like footy, I\'m going to attempt to learn all about it without any of my friends knowing and then shock them with my knowledge of the game, easy right?

So I’m asking for your help.

First off I need a team to support, a decent one –one that will possibly crush theirs into the ground in those tournaments and win a lot of cups, so I can gloat. Possibly a team with some nice stylish metrosexual players –that would be nice also.

A team with a good strip would be a must –if I am to purchase a football top I want to get one with suitably fashionable cut and colours. I quite like Newcastle because of the black and white strip, the vertical stripes are rather slimming –also they are one of the better teams right? My friends support Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Leeds. If I understand correctly only Liverpool is any good out of those?

Um…I quite like the colours: red, black, white and purple and I prefer speed and dexterity over strength and stamina when I play characters on computer games.

Right, that’s enough for now. It’s over to you lot.

And thanks. :)

I have a better Idea, find something you like that would make them jealous...or whatever.

Lets face it, Footballs a pansy\'s game played by acting castoffs. That and the afformentioned 90 minutes of pure shite would never see me support it!
Why people cry over the fact a bunch of OTHER guys couldn\'t punt a bag of air into a net and win some sort of recognition for it is beyond me...
Although somehow failing in this simple task in itself is rather pitifull.
Just tell them you have more important things to do than make tea while they watch this mince on TV, licking the cats arse sounds far more appealing lol

Just say no!

Stand up for yourself...you are right..licking the cat\'s arse is preferable:D

I have always loathed and despised football. When I was about 10 I complained to the Games Teacher about the fact that all we seemed to do was play football, so he told me if I didn\'t like it I could, \"play hockey with the girls\", so I walked over the field and asked the female games teacher if I could join in her game of hockey...and that was that for the next 8 years of education:innocent:

If they had let me continue playing Hockey (was a damned fine keeper) *sniff*.... it was all Rugby in our school for the lads (Not that I minded too much, just was terrible at it), not even any footy bar the last year when we forced a revolution and got to the semi-finals of the schools cup whilst the rugby lot crashed out! ;). Odd time we got long distance running.

Anyways, off topic. Go for the glory and to really irk them. Man United (red for you) or Chelsea, seems most folk hate them in some form. (The Liverpool fan will be up in arms about United).

As for getting up on the knowledge and astonding them, might take a bit of time to even know the players let alone the ins and outs of the game such as transfers and old rivalries. Best bet might be to trawl the net for transfer rumours when the window is open and find out something they don\'t know. Or perhaps be able to rattle off some facts about your team\'s players this season. (Generally folk know a lot more about their own team than others so could have them beat there)

Honestly though seems a lot of effort for something you don\'t enjoy, if I had to do the same for say, tennis (about the only sport I can\'t stand) it\'d do my head in.

Ok, I\'ll chip in here for the \"pro footy minority\". If you\'re looking for a team based solely on results and the colours red and black then yes, Manchester United is you\'re bets option (providing you don\'t actually live in Manchester of course :p ). However, I would strongly recommend against declaring your allegiance to them publicly as the world wil generally hate you. It\'s much better to pick a team that either reflects a style of play that you appreciate or that you have some other genuine conection with. I\'m a Spurs fan (live with it :p ) because they have always embidied an open and flowing game that generally guarantees a large number of goals (for and against) and some very exciting matches. They have a solid pediree but are not one of the clubs that seem to be able to \"buy trophies\" year after year. Supporting a football team is all about building a relationship. That\'s why we get emotional when our team loses or wins an important match - because we care. This is hard to fake - especially if you\'ve picked the wrong team to follow.

If you really want to gen up on the latest facts/rumours, I recommend the BBC football website especially the gossip column. It highlights what all the different newspaper are saying about teams, players transfers etc so at least you\'ll have a vague idea what might me happening off the pitch.

Having said all that, my advice is to not bother pretending. If you don\'t like footie there\'s not a lot you can do about it. Spend matchtimes painting. Personally I can\'t stand rugby and there\'s no way I could pretend otherwise.

Newcastle stadium can apparently hold 68000 people - it can\'t, it can hold 34000 fat Geordies lol

Big guys. Run really fast. Smash into each other. BIG impacts.

In fact, I just read this article in my Popular Mechanics Magazine...

http://www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/sports/4212171.html

I think a 150 G-force impact is definately NOT pansie-ish.

Sports. Bah.

Pay someone millions of dollars or pounds to chase a ball around and suddenly they think they\'re important.

Didnt participate in sport in high school - mainly because we had a high school football coach who was of the opinion that if you didnt play football in high school you wouldnt do anything in your future life. Of course the fact that the big football heros havent ever left home except for college, and the nerd has been to places far forgien may give me something to throw in their faces when I go to my 25 year high school reunion.:D

It certainly isn\'t, but now imagine that 150 G-force impact without the benefit of a helmet, pads, and a six-figure salary. That\'s what we call \'rugby\'.:innocent:

I didn\'t like football until I was about 13 or 14, and faced plenty of ridicule at school because of it. I found myself watching a bit, for no particular reason really, as I entered my later teens (actually it was perhaps because it was on in pubs) and discovered that I was beginning to enjoy it more and more. It\'s now amongst my favourite sports.

Due to getting into it later in life than most people I remain completely uncommitted to a team though, which a lot of people just can\'t comprehend. I have a soft spot for Liverpool I guess, but if any English teams are in Europe I\'m behind them 100%.

This is a good way to be I think. If nothing else you can be the voice of reason in pub arguments. I\'ve been used as the deciding factor if a debate is getting rather heated (due to my relative impartiality) which is normally a pretty funny way to get one friend very much on your side and annoy the hell out of another!

As far as forcing yourself to get into footy, I wouldn\'t necessarily recommend that, but playing a Fantasy Football game is a good way to increase your interest and knowledge in my experience.

There are certainly people in the league that I\'m involved in who started out with little interest, but have got sucked in due to the competetiveness. And if you don\'t mind me gloating for a moment - I\'m currently 772nd out of 268,861 overall participants. Go me! :D

Manchester United and Ronaldo should fit the bill.

Ever tried actually playing yourself though? It might be easier to enjoy watching it once you get a feel for the strategy.
